Glee Encore DVD - Giveaway

Since reviewing Glee's Season 1, last year, I have been Gleeked! Clary and I love the show and are currently watching Season 2, thanks to Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment who provided the disks. We try to watch an episode a week and were doing great but have missed a month due to schedules and we talk about how bummed we are practically every day.

We love it! We love the show, the actors, the writing, the chaos, but mostly, we love the songs. We sing along to almost every one which is why we love Glee for Wii. Our children, know about Glee but have never seen the show. We would never allow it, due to the very adult writing. They ask if they can watch it because they too, love the music.

Thankfully, we can now allow our kids to watch Glee because, the parts of the show that would be appropriate for those under 16 (the songs) are being released on a DVD entitled, Glee Encore.

Hooray!!! I am so excited to announce this....

Win a DVD copy of Glee’s musical numbers

Get ready, young Gleeks! With the newest release from this hit Fox TV show, younger fans of the popular program can enjoy the simple innocence and fun of the show, combined with the music they love all – all in one place! Scunci's Bendini's Are Changing Our Lives - Review & Giveaway

Goddess and I love wearing our hair down but for school, I try to put her hair into ponytails or make her wear head bands. Goddess doesn't wear head bands the normal way. She wears them right at her hairline like an accessory rather than a way to hold back her hair. Also, her hair is very straight and ponytails never last. Enter Bendini's.

These things stay in and are so easy to use. I have had long hair my whole life but have never been really good about styling or making it look pretty with clips which means I also don't know how to do Goddess' hair.

But with the Scunci Bendini's you simply insert them and flip the decorative part pack. Easy and more importantly, they hold. If a clip can hold my hair back, it can hold anything. Plus, they are really beautiful. Goddess and I want two of each on the market.

The Giveaway: One lucky winner will receive two randomly selected clips to try out for themselves.

To Win:
Mandatory Entry. If this is not followed, none of your extra entries will count. Head over to Scunci and tell me your favorite clip by Midnight, April 14, 2011

Thr3e By Ted Dekker - A Review

By all accounts seminary student Kevin Parsins is leading a good, if not virtuous, life. But like all people, Kevin has his secrets. And someone wants them revealed.

While driving home from a day at graduate school, Kevin receives a call from a mysterious stranger who calls himself Slater. Slater demands Kevin confess his sin in the next three minutes or the vehicle he is manning will be blown to pieces.

Thus starts a harrowing chain of events. After narrowly escaping his exploding car, Kevin continues to receive phone calls from Slater, each with another riddle, another consequence, and another three minutes to confess his sin.

The problem is Kevin is unsure of what that sin might be. And Slater's cycle won't stop until he figures it out.

What I Can Tell You:
Crazy! What a ride. Ted Dekkar, New York Times Best Selling Author has written some great books. This is my second Dekkar read. I loved the build up and twist at the end that I honestly didn't see coming.  Not a big mystery fan but found myself devouring every word trying to figure out who the "killer" Slater was.  Loads of twists and turns along the way, makes for a fun filled ride.

Need another reason to check out this book? Ted may be one of the cutest male writers out there.

Going to try to watch Thr3e over the weekend, as it was made into a movie in 2006 starring Marc Blucas.  Excited to see it, I think my husband will enjoy it and now that I know the ending, I won't feel bad if I fall asleep like I do 90% of the time.

Have camera, will travel, so of course snapped some photos for myself and the school. Goddess knows the photographer so, where was she looking? Right at me!

Dialogues With Goddess 3-28-11

This morning as we were driving to school Goddess asked,
"What would happen to us, if something happen to you and Daddy?"

I told her not to worry and that nothing was going to happen to us but if something did,
"your aunt will take care of you."

She said, "I would want you to be there."

"I know, I always wanted my mommy there when I was little too."

"It's sad that your mommy isn't here. You should look in her mirror (now mine) and look for her. Maybe she will be there,"

*insert me freaking out*

"Ahhh, maybe, why have you ever seen anyone in the mirror?"

"No, but since it was her mirror maybe if you told her you want to see her, maybe she will come!"

Well, now, this is not the conversations I want to have with my daughter. You know, any that include me not being there for my kids, but now, the paranormal stuff...this is just too freaky.

Seeing something in a mirror is one of my fears. It is not something I have ever talked about but she totally freaked me out today! I know she is innocent and just almost 6 year old talking but, I was totally freaked out with goose bumps and all.

The Garfield Show: Private Eye Ventures on DVD

Follow Garfield, Jon and Odie as they solve whodunits about time travel, undercover kitties and mouthwatering lasagna when "The Garfield Show: Private-Eye Ventures" arrives onto DVD April 12th from Vivendi Entertainment.

The collection features six hilarious episodes with adventurous detective themes from the wildly popular show currently airing on The Cartoon Network. The all-new CGI-animated cartoon is based on Jim Davis´ timeless comic strip, which was recently voted #1 by Nickelodeon Magazine readers. The vivid series follows the lasagna-loving, Monday-hating fat cat into situations both fantastic and familiar, while entertaining with his unique point-of-view and his sarcastic wit. Packaged with bonus features including Garfield shorts, "The Garfield Show: Private-Eye Ventures" DVD will be available for the suggested retail price of $14.93. Run-time is 72 minutes.

Synopsis:
Follow the clues and get ready for fun-filled adventures with "The Garfield Show: Private-Eye Ventures." You´ll be on the case with Jon, Odie and your favorite orange feline as he meanders from one caper to the next, investigating talking lasagna, undercover kitties, time travel and the most important mystery of all: what´s for dinner?

What I Can Tell You:
We babysat for a friend today so I had four kids here today ranging in age from 2-8. They played for a while, than decided they wanted to watch TV. No one could agree on what to watch so I walked in with a copy of the newest Garfield DVD and put it in. It was a hit! They watched it two times. Even the 2 year old loved it! I know I keep saying the same thing when I review a Garfield DVD but it really is some of the best CGI animation.

Garfield fans and even new Garfield fans will love this witty, fun character.

Amaryllis In Blueberry by Christina Meldrum - Beautiful Prose

Amaryllis in Blueberry

In the stirring tradition of The Secret Life of Bees and The Poisonwood Bible, Amaryllis in Blueberry explores the complexity of human relationships set against an unforgettable backdrop. Told through the haunting voices of Dick and Seena Slepy and their four daughters, Christina Meldrum's soulful novel weaves together the past and the present of a family harmed--and healed--by buried secrets.

"Maybe, unlike hope, truth couldn't be contained in a jar..."

Meet the Slepys: Dick, the stern doctor, the naive husband, a man devoted to both facts and faith; Seena, the storyteller, the restless wife,  a mother of four, a lover of myth.  And their children, the Marys:  Mary Grace, the devastating beauty; Mary Tessa, the insistent inquisitor; Mary Catherine, the saintly, lost soul; and finally, Amaryllis, Seena's unspoken favorite, born with the mystifying ability to sense the future, touch the past and distinguish the truth tellers from the most convincing liar of all.

When Dick insists his family move from Michigan to the unfamiliar world of Africa for missionary work, he can't possibly foresee how this new land and its people will entrance and change his daughters--and himself--forever.

Nor can he predict how Africa will spur his wife Seena toward an old but unforgotten obsession.   In fact, Seena may be falling into a trance of her own. . .

What I Can Tell You: I am not sure I loved the story, but I DID love was the writing. The book begged to be read out loud. The beautiful prose made me long for the days of high school when we all read together and broke each part of the book apart, dissecting each character and sentence until we couldn't tell our own life from the life of the book.

The Marys confused me. I found myself forgetting who was who and having to go back and forth so many times. I wasn't sure if I liked Seena, as a mother, wife or woman. Her confusion, restlessness and favoritism made her unlikable at times. And, we begin with her being on trial for Dick, her husband's murder then goes back to the beginning. I found myself riveted in the first few chapters than it lost something, regaining momentum at different points but still a beautifully written piece of art!

This would make a great book group project!

After checking out Christina Meldrum's website, because of her writing, I am very interested in reading Madapple.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest opinion from Simon and Schuster.

Handsome's Victory Dance

As parents, it doesn't take much for us to be proud. Sometimes it is the simplest things but when our kids just do something extraordinary pride swells and we are overcome with love for the people they are becoming.

Handsome has come a long way. He is still a little shy, doesn't always know how to make appropriate conversation or how to stay focused on what he is being told but the obstacles he has overcome are often unnoticed by others. But not me, I see everything he does. Hear everything he says and feel everything he feels. There are times my heart aches for the things I see him experience but he is never affected by them. Thankfully his comprehension on a lot of things slips right by, protecting him from meanness or ignorance and I am so thankful.

Friday, I saw him standing in the middle of a circle of boys, his eyes were closed and his fingers were in his mouth. He was swaying and smiling but it was a timid, nervous, uncomfortable smile. He was way outside his comfort zone and I felt it but he really wanted to play. They were playing Zombie Tag whatever that is and he knew the game which I found out when I asked him later. He WAS outside his comfort zone but he really wanted to play with them. I love how brave he was. No one else saw the discomfort but I did and I know what it was for him to stand in the middle of them, vulnerable, with closed eyes. But he did it and had a great time. The sight of him standing there was only about 3 seconds but it is embedded in my mind. I know that he is fine. I know that he was playing. I know that he overcame an obstacle (eyes closed in the middle of a room of people) yet, that little frightened face scorches my soul. It will be there forever.

My fear for him is real. I worry about him in the big, bad world and hope that time, and maturation strengthens him but I worry!

But....the victory dance of his goal last weekend is also in my head! Handsome is a very good soccer player and ended a wash out by the 1st place team but getting a goal for his team. I didn't have my camera, (can you even imagine?) but my girlfriend Sandra (babybindle) did, and got this awesome shot right after he scored!

He is totally doing a dig and often celebrates too much. He has about 8 goals under his belt this season and I couldn't be prouder.

Things Heard From Goddess Today!

"I have butt hands want to smell!?" Ahhh no, thanks honey.
"Yes, you do! You know you do!"

Watching her dad play DS.
"Come on Dad, follow your dreams."

After he lost a game.
'You have to live with it."

Over the past month, after every sentence: "I didn't see that coming."

Over the past year, prior to every logical question: "Let me guess...." i.e. sees her dad getting his work boots on, "let me guess, you are going to work?" or I am standing at the sink and turn on the water and grab the sponge, "let me guess, you are going to wash some dishes" Grr...makes us crazy.

Over the past year after she asks a question: "I know that!" Grr...

But, then there is this face:

How could we stay mad at that?

By the way...bowling with a bunch of boys at a birthday party today! Using the "heavy" ball according to all the boys when she picked it up, got the only Strike of the game!  Woot! Woot! That's my girl! Came in second overall too.

Bausch & Lomb Bio true Vlog

Just got back from the eye doctor extraordinaire and after a lenghtly discussion on life (I am a 9 year patient), kids, husband, business, and eyes he tells me that my eyes are doing great!

As someone who has had her share of eye problems, infections, and more this is very good news.

Nope, you are not looking at a planet, that is the inside of my eye. Check  it out my eye. So cool...he has a camera that he puts up to your eye so he can see the inside on a computer screen.  The bright part is my retina and the dark thing next to it is a nevus that I have to have looked at every year. All looks good!

Thankfully when I got home, I had a box waiting for me containing Bio true a new product from Bausch & Lomb.
Check out my video blog where I mention a million times that Bio true is inspired by the biology of your eye. Sorry about that B & L. Still not used to being on camera after a year! Need to do it more often.

Biotrue is inspired by the biology of your eyes™. It goes beyond cleaning by being the only* solution to bring together three bio-inspired innovations:
  • Has a lubricant found naturally in your eyes
  • Matches the pH of healthy tears
  • Keeps certain beneficial tear proteins active
Biotrue works like your eyes to provide you with the health and comfort your eyes deserve, helping to make lens wear easier on your eyes.

What I Can Tell You:
The most important aspect for me on this solution is that, I didn't have to add drops to the lens before I inserted it into my eye. Dry contacts against my eye make me crazy. There is enough lubrication in the solution for me to take it right out of the case and put it into my eye. That says a lot!

Disclosure:
I wrote this review while participating in a Mom Central Consulting blog tour on behalf of Bausch + Lomb Biotrue. I received a Biotrue sample and a gift card to thank me for taking the time to participate.

Texas Blue by Jodi Thomas Book Review + Author Guest Post

Texas Blue by New York Times Best Selling Author Jodi Thomas, hits store shelves on April 5th. This is the 5th book in the “Whispering Mountain” series.

Synopsis
Gambling man Lewton Paterson wants to marry into a respectable family, even if it costs him his friendship with Duncan McMurray. After fleecing a train ticket from one of the three gentlemen picked to call on Duncan's cousins, Lewt makes his way to Whispering Mountain. But seducing a well-bred woman is harder than Lewt thought, and he realizes that to entice a McMurray sister, he'll need to learn a thing or two about ranching—and love.

What I Can Tell You:
Over the past year I have become a huge Jodi Thomas fan and friend. What I think makes my book reviews interesting is that I am not a huge fan of romance novels. They all seem very much the same after a while. Girl needs saving from herself, someone else, or from the eventual hero, they fall in love under distress and live happily ever after. Stale, old, boring.

I don't get that with Jodi's books. Lewt is our hero this time and while the synopsis is very good, that doesn't really describe the story for me. Yes, Lewt is looking to get into a respectable family and will do what he needs to in order to accomplish this, even stealing a ticket and worming his way onto the trip but he doesn't come off as a complete clod!

My favorite character by far was Emily or Em as she goes by. She doesn't want to be married off and has no interest in entertaining a bunch of strangers. She devises a plan to go undermine her cousin Duncan and sit this horse and pony show out. She isn't looking for a husband.

Jodi creates easy tension by creating an innocent friendship between the main characters that sweetly blossoms in a very realistic way.

Once again, Jodi had me reading romance without feeling like a complete fool, my favorite scenes were the sweet moments on the porch swing between Em and Lewt!

Guest Post:
From the first page I had a great time with TEXAS BLUE.  It opens with two friends parting ways one stormy night in Austin.  Duncan McMurray, a Texas Ranger, is off to fight at the border and Lewt, a gambler, plans to find a wife while his friend is away.  Lewt knows if his friend finds out he plans to court one of his cousins Duncan, or Duck as the girls call him, would be furious.  Lewt is a wonderful friend, but a gambler would never be husband material.  Only, Lewt is willing to do whatever it takes, including learn about ranching and proper manners, to find a wife.

What he finds is Emily McMurray who can run a huge ranch, but is shy around men.  Lewt has to learn that in the end it’s what she wants and need that will make her happy…and what the lady wants is him.  Only his skills can save Duncan and he hopes win her heart.

I began reading western romance when I was a kid.  I think I’ve always loved it and, being from Texas, the world always seemed very real to me.  I live in a small town where you still see guys with spurs on eating lunch out and every Saturday people ride their horses up to Dairy Queen.  I’ve won Romance Writers of America’s RITA three times for historical romance.  Sometimes when I’m working I step so fully back in the past it’s hard to pull out even to answer the phone.

I know my readers are going to love this story as much as I loved writing it.  For those of you who would like more about what was happening at the ranch before Lewt arrives, check my website  www.jodithomas.com and read two chapters that had to be cut from early in the book.  Remember, they haven’t been edited so jump over the misspellings.
Thanks for reading and I’d love to hear from you.

52 Weeks of Happiness - Week 3 - The Photoshoot

During another photo shoot for Zbowz (coming soon), Goddess was in rare form, even putting on her heels and strutting in the sunshine.

I had no idea she had this leg talent! What's your talent?

Goddess was student of the month! Hooray Goddess! My boo-boo was so proud. Hopefully Handsome's day comes soon. He was a tad bit jealous of the award and the pencil they are awarded.

Animal Lovers - Help the Animals Save Their Own Skins

Save Our Skins a campaign started through Earth Justice gives endangered animals a voice.

By following the animals on Twitter you can hear what they have to say about the Congressional plans that will greatly affect the wilderness and several endangered species. Each animal uses a Twitter account to narrate their stories. Check out mama Polar Bear @PolarBearSOS as she works around the clock to provide for her cubs despite melting glaciers and shrinking food supplies. Whew - can't a mom catch a break?!

Murder Takes The Cake by Gayle Trent Hits Shelves March 29th

MURDER TAKES THE CAKE, a delectable cozy mystery from author Gayle Trent, was a bestseller when it debuted as an eBook, and Gallery Books is delighted to publish a revised edition in trade paperback format. In MURDER TAKES THE CAKE (Gallery Books; March 29, 2011; $15.00) cake decorator and amateur sleuth Daphne Martin gets her hands dirty trying to clear her good name after a routine cake delivery ends with the discovery of a dead body.

Since she moved back to her hometown in southern Virginia, Daphne has been having a hard time getting her new cake decorating business, Daphne’s Delectable Cakes, off the ground. It doesn’t inspire much confidence—or new orders—when Daphne sets out to deliver a spice cake with cream cheese frosting decorated with orange and red satin ribbons and a red apple—and finds her client dead.

The town is abuzz with news of Yodel Watson’s mysterious death. It seems everyone had reason to poison the town gossip. Was she murdered by the philandering pet shop owner, her church potluck nemesis, or the Save-A-Buck’s cranky produce manager-turned-bagger—or even the new cake decorator?

To help prove she’s no confectionary killer, Daphne recruits her old flame, Ben Jacobs, editor of the local newspaper, and quickly stirs up a long-hidden family scandal that just might hold the secret ingredient she needs to solve the case. But she has to act fast, before the real culprit decides that taking sweet revenge on Daphne would be icing on the cake.

MURDER TAKES THE CAKE includes mouth-watering recipes for cakes, cupcakes, and frosting.

What I can Tell You:
Honestly, I am so not the mystery murder type chick but the last two mystery murder books I have read have been awesome. I think it is because they are chick lit which means for me, no courtroom dialogue that is way above my head and wordy. You guys know that is why I call myself the Amateur Book Reviewer. Reading heavy dialogue just kills me. What I loved about this is that Gayle takes us on a journey with characters that I can relate to. Daphne is just dropping off a cake when she finds herself in the midst of a murder and a potential victim herself.

Although Yodel is literally dead when we first meet her in the book, I loved her! She would have been a wonderful character to get to know. She was a spicy chick.  Reading her diary entries cracked me up.

Daphne is likeable and strong and the story light and bright considering the theme.

Murder mystery and cake decorating tips all rolled up into one, how can you go wrong?

Celebrate Earth Day On Saturday March 26

Earth Hour 2011 will take place at 8.30pm (all time zones), Saturday, March 26.

IDEAS FOR PARENTS, CAREGIVERS AND THEIR CHILDREN TO PARTICIPATE

THROW AN EARTH HOUR PARTY!

20 SIMPLE “BEYOND THE HOUR” IDEAS TO COMMIT TO FOR THE FUTURE OF OUR PLANET

WHAT IS EARTH HOUR?

Earth Hour is driven by the global community’s will to protect the planet we share. Earth Hour’s exponential growth – from a single-city initiative in 2007 to a global movement across 128 countries in 2010 – is indicative of the growing desire for a cleaner, healthier world that is gathering momentum by the hour.  At 8.30pm on Saturday 26 March 2011, Earth Hour will mark a moment of global contemplation to go beyond the hour; a collective commitment by individuals throughout the world to be the ongoing change they want to see in it.

Earth Hour 2011 will ask the world to:

Switch off your lights for Earth Hour at 8.30pm, Saturday 26 March 2011 and celebrate your commitment to the planet with the people of the world
Sign up and Share stories of your actions that benefit the planet on earthhour.org
Sustain your actions beyond the hour – http://www.beyondthehour.org/

HOW DO WE INVOLVE OUR CHILDREN?

In a bid to extend the message to young children and their caregivers, the Earth Hour organization has appointed the globally loved animated character Pocoyo as the first Global Kids’ Ambassador of Earth Hour, Beyond the Hour.  Pocoyo will reach out to millions of preschool-aged fans across the globe, fostering “Learning through Laughter,” to inform children about environmental issues.

Parent and their caregivers can find a fun activity book, promo, screensavers and wallpaper at http://www.pocoyo.com/earth_hour_2011.html

At the recent Beyond the Hour press conference in Singapore, Earth Hour Co-Founder and Executive Director, Andy Ridley commented “Everyone has the power to make change: a CEO can change an organization, a 7-year-old can change a classroom, and a president can change a country. What we are announcing today is just the beginning.  It is through the collective action of individuals and organizations that we will be able to truly make a difference, which is why we are urging people across the planet to share how they will go beyond the hour this Earth Hour.”

Chloe Nicol, a 7-year-old girl from Australia, is guiding her school to increase recycling and reduce energy waste. The school now also shuts their blinds instead of using air-conditioning to cool the rooms.

Nathi Mzileni, a 15-year-old boy from Swaziland, was inspired to take action in 2010 when he realised his town did not participate in Earth Hour. He started a group at his High School called Green Enviro to educate people about climate change, and this year will single-handedly make Earth Hour a reality in his town of Shimunye, Swaziland.

Parrys Raines, a 15-year-old Australian girl, has convinced her school to install water filling stations and provide each student and teacher with a reusable stainless steel drinking bottle to reduce plastic bottle waste.

Parents, caregivers and their children EVERYWHERE can support the initiative by throwing an Earth Hour Party Celebration to help spread the word on saving our environment.  We’ve included some easy tips for the perfect party, enjoy!

•Make invitations out of recycled paper or send an email invite.
•Use organic and locally sustained food.
•Serve finger foods to skip using plates and utensils, and use cloth napkins that can be washed and used again.
•Make dishes that don’t require the oven or electricity to prepare.
•Be creative with food, licorice ends can be cut off to make edible straws for the kids.
•Family craft project - decorate canvas shopping totes with eco-friendly paint, old buttons, etc.
•Have a nighttime, outdoor, eco friendly scavenger hunt by flashlight - hunt for garden tools, seeds, egg cartons, etc. Once the items are found, explain how they are used for recycling and to save our environment.
•Have a recycled book exchange for the kids and adults, instead of favors.
•Have fun and remember to have enough candles and flashlights for everyone to see!

We have also attached a list of “20 SIMPLE IDEAS FOR PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS TO HELP CHILDREN TO GO “BEYOND THE HOUR”, AND HELP SAVE OUR PLANET!”

We look forward to you supporting Earth Hour and helping Pocoyo make children everywhere aware of the initiative.  Please let us know if we can provide any additional information.

“20 SIMPLE IDEAS FOR PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS TO HELP CHILDREN TO GO “BEYOND THE HOUR”, AND HELP SAVE OUR PLANET!”

At the centre of the Earth Hour is the symbolic collective action of lights out on March 26.
Yet Earth Hour is about much more than just switching off the lights. It’s about switching to a more sustainable lifestyle. Being mindful, using less, making everyday choices to reduce our environmental footprint.

If you want your kids to be environmentally responsible when they grow up, you've got to teach them while they're still young

Here are some tips for going beyond hour. Big or small, through all our efforts combined, these changes will help make a difference.

Turn off lights and appliances at the wall when not in use
Explain to children that lights, TV’s and computers use energy, and that it is in short supply!  This is an easy way to reduce wasted energy and carbon. If you switch off just one appliance at the wall you could save 99 pounds of greenhouse gas!  Ask your child if he can imagine what 99 pounds might look like, and show him/her some examples – like twenty 5 pound bags of potatoes!

Stop using plastic containers
Explain to your child that every bottle they throw in the trash sits in a big pile at the local dump.  Have your child help you pick out fun, brightly colored refillable or reusable containers.

Make recycling fun!
Make recycling fun by inventing games such as tossing non-breakable recyclable items into trashcans at a short distance!  Use recyclable materials in craft projects, for example use cardboard to make masks, or paper to make airplanes!   Create art projects such as paper mache and mosaics. And donate discarded items to charity!

Have a candlelight family and grab a blanket if it’s cold!
Once a week, have a candlelight family hour and tell stories or play games instead of watching TV.  And if it’s cold, wear an extra layer of clothes or snuggle up under a blanket to read books.

Use the sunlight to warm up a room
The house pet knows this and you kids will enjoy it too.  Open blinds and drapes on a sunny but chilly day and enjoy the glorious warmth that pours in through the windows!

Close drapes and blinds when it’s too hot!
In the summer heat, turn down or off the air-conditioner to save energy by teaching children how they can keep from getting hot and sticky by closing the drapes and blinds to keep the room cool.   They will enjoy their playtime better and parents will save money too!

Watch your water use
Only 3% of the world’s water is fresh water, and of that, two-thirds is frozen in glaciers and polar ice-caps! Teach kids water-wise habits at home at a young age.   Turn off the water while brushing teeth, take shorter showers, and no water-hose fights in hot weather!

Throw a green birthday party
Kids parties generate a lot of trash. Email invitations; choose reusable kid-friendly cups and plates; and create a craft activity for kids to take something home instead of wasteful goody bags.

Walk more
Walk to pre-school with your kids!  It’s fun to spend the extra time with your children, great exercise and you save on gas too.

Take public transport when you can
Buses and trains ease congestion, reduce emissions, and allow you to relax with your kids.  Relax and read a book together instead of driving the car!

Car pool
Double the efficiency of your car by carpooling to pre-school!

Buy earth-friendly back-to-school products
It’s always fun shopping for supplies. Choose recycled pencils and notebooks, PVC-free shoes, hemp backpacks, organic cotton clothes, or re-used clothing where possible.

Take a reusable cloth bag when you go shopping – decorate bags with your kids!
Did you know that American use 380 billion plastic bags every year? In addition to being manufactured from non-renewable fossil fuels, plastic bags degrade extremely slowly.  Buy a canvas bag, and decorate it with recycled items!

Buy local, seasonal produce
Take the kids for a fun morning out and buy produce at your local Farmer’s Market!   Explain how far much of the food you buy has travelled before it reaches your table. Food produced locally costs less to process and transport, and it’s fresher and better for you.

Cut down on meat
Try to eat a little bit less meat by having the children help you to make one extra vegetarian meal each week.  It takes only about 723 gallons of water to produce 2.2 pounds of wheat, but 3250 gallons of water to produce 2.2 pounds of beef.

Plant natives in the garden
Enjoy some fresh air with the children in the garden and plant native plants!  Kids might like to have their own miniature size garden box to tend! Use native plants, they require less water, care and maintenance. Plus, you will be creating the ideal conditions to attract native species to your backyard or balcony by creating a habitat for them.

Start a compost
What kid isn’t fascinated with worms? Create a worm composter!  Almost 75 per cent of household waste is compostable. Composting not only saves landfill space, but recycles material and saves money on fertilizers.  Worms to speed up the process.  Ask the children to fill the composter with food scraps and in a few months, they will see how the “garbage” becomes rich dirt they can help you spread around to make the garden grow.

Grown your own fruit and vegetables
Watching things grow is exciting!  Reduce your footprint and have your kids help you grow their own veggies. Let them choose seeds, plant and tend them together.  Fresh veggies are good for you and for the earth. No packaging and no food miles!

Install a rainwater tank
See how much rain you can catch!  Secure your own water supply and collect water for use in the garden. Rainwater is free, so parents, that means a reduction in bills too!

Share your tips with friends!
Have a weekly contest with friends to see who did the most to help save the planet!

Nutella Party That Almost Never Happened!

Whhoosshhh..Today I hosted the last of four Nutella parties and I am happy to report that Nutella has some big and some new fans in New York.

I have been a Nutella fan for over 40 years. It was a staple in my house growing up. Who doesn't love chocolate and why not spread it on bread? Oh yeah!

Growing up we used Nutella in the most basic way. Spread it like peanut butter between two pieces of bread and wah la, heaven sandwich!

Over the years I used it on wraps, between cookies, heated up on a waffle, Nutella brownies, pies and more so when I was asked to host a Nutella party, I was thrilled and happy to share with my girlfriends.

Nutella Party

The first party was set up for March 7th, we had a half day at school due to the weather. The second was set up for the 11th and had to be canceled because the school was flooded. The weather wasn't cooperating and Mother Nature was giving me a complex. Was I not supposed to have this party? Was it ever going to happen?

March 14th, another party was set and half my guests canceled due to sickness for themselves, their kids or car problem. We had all kids of issues. So, I had the party anyway, supplies had been purchased for the party on the 7th and I was worried about my breads, croissants, yogurt and fruit going bad. It had to happen regardless of the 5 who couldn't come.

So, 6 of us, got together for coffee, tea, smoothies, a collection of breads and enough knives to sample everything. We played Scrabble, passed babies around, and talked, laughed and ate. The best kind of parties! All the ladies have at one time or another had Nutella but had no idea of all the ways to use it. They had never thought of putting it on anything but two slices of bread. They loved the idea of waffle sandwiches or open faced sandwiches with fruit on top. They also were impressed with something that I also learned during the party. Nutella is a great alternative to peanut butter. If someone has a peanut allergy they can eat Nutella. We think peanut allergy means nut allergy but it doesn't.

IMG_7485

Goddess loves chocolate but has a peanut allergy. I wanted to test it and she wanted to try it. I gave her the smallest amount of Nutella on my pinky. She loved it but I was still nervous and told her that we would wait an hour. So, there I sat with my Epipen at the ready. Nothing! She was fine and has had a Nutella sandwich for lunch 4 days this week. Which is great because lunch is always stressful and she has never had a sandwich before. Lunch for Goddess, handled! Thanks Nutella.

Today's final party was scheduled for after the school morning meeting. We headed to my house, I started the coffee and tossed a bunch of stuff on the table and walked back to get mugs. When I got back two of the girls who had never tried Nutella were sticking plastic knives into the jar. They LOVED it and wondered what took so long.

Everyone was excited about their gifts from Nutella, a spreader, sample of Nutella, computer mug, coupon and recipe ideas.

IMG_7482

Thank you Nutella. I will be a fan for life and you gained two NEW fans.

Disclaimer: I hosted Nutella through a Mommy Parties Campaign who provided the information and gift bags for me and my friends.

Another photo from a fire in my town. These belongs were on the front lawn of a home that burned down. The pictures are sad and disturbing to me. The belongs of a family strewn all over the lawn are heartbreaking.

But this picture below, conveys more sadness than the 50+ I took.
