Acclaimed author Debra Ginsberg’s gripping new novel, WHAT THE HEART REMEMBERS (NAL Trade Paperback Original; September 4, 2012; $15), explores the dangerously complicated dynamics of the human heart.  Ginsberg’s previous titles have garnered praise from The New York Times Book Review, People, USA Today and The Boston Globe.  Her novel The Grift was a New York Times Notable Book for 2008.

In WHAT THE HEART REMEMBERS, Eden’s whole life changes when she receives a heart transplant from an unknown donor.  She is plagued by dreams of people and places she has never seen and she feels compelled to move from Portland, Oregon to San Diego, leaving her friends, former fiancĂ© and family behind.  There, Eden meets Darcy, a lonely and recently widowed young woman.  Darcy knows that she should be mourning her late husband, Peter, but she can’t shake thoughts of Adam, the young bartender she was having an affair with, who has suddenly disappeared.

Darcy and Eden feel a deep and instant connection to each other, and become fast friends.  Yet, the more Eden learns about Darcy, the more she realizes that all is not as it seems.  Eden’s mysterious and sometimes frightening dreams become more and more frequent.  Can Eden listen to what her heart is trying to tell her before it’s too late for her—and for Darcy?

Debra Ginsberg is the author of three previous novels.  She lives in San Diego. Visit her website at www.debraginsberg.com.

The 411 by Maria:

I read this last week while I was recovering from surgery oddly enough. Although it was nothing like the heart transplant in the book, it was a good read to get through the worst, most painful of my days.

In What the Heart Remembers we meet Eden who has received a heart transplant from a donor. She suddenly changes her life after dealing with feelings that aren't necessarily her own. For most of the book, I was unsure of who the heart belonged to. The writer does a great job of building suspense and crafting a story with great characters.

Darcy, Eden, Derek are the main focus of the book with three secondary characters that are quite important to the story.  The story of Eden leads us to wonder, are our organs really just components to allow our body to do what they need for us, or do they make up who we are, storing memories and personality traits that are our personal makeup?

Great read! Easy to jump in and out of if you can't dedicate constant time to reading.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of the book for the purpose of this review.
