Take Care Of Standing Water Problems Quickly

Rainfall is a wonderful thing for yards and gardens, but lack of adequate drainage can wreak serious havoc on your property. Standing water next to a home can eventually damage its foundation, and water standing in the yard can be a magnet for animals and pests. Luckily, getting rid of collected water is not a difficult task and there are numerous options for getting the job done.

Consider installing a storm drain system in the yard to dramatically alleviate the problem of standing water. All it takes is some planning and PVC pipe from a local hardware store. Get a shovel and dig a trench in the yard from the point where water collects to a point away from any structure. Make sure the trench is dug on a slight decline, with the lowest point located where the water needs to drain. From there, install the pipe into the trench, fill in dirt, and then fix the landscaping over the top.

Another option that can help get rid of standing water close to a structure is to install gutters. It is possible to buy gutters in a wide array of styles and colors. They come in many materials, as well, including stainless steel, copper, aluminum, and vinyl. Vinyl is the most popular material, especially since seamless styles have become common. Pre-made gutters may be purchased at many hardware stores, but it is much easier to have them installed by a licensed and certified contractor.

Regardless of which option you choose to fix issues related to standing water, there are other things to consider. Pooling water can become stagnant quickly. Until a drainage system is in place, you may consider investing in a pump to keep deep pools drained. Also, buy plenty of mosquito water tablets to put into standing water. The tablets will keep the water from becoming a mosquito breeding ground. No matter which method you choose, just remember that it is highly important for your home, your property, and your family that standing water problems are fixed as quickly as possible.
