4 Essentials When Bringing Home a New Kitten

It's happened. You fell in love with an adorable fluffball at your local animal shelter. Before you bring home your new kitten, however, there are some steps that you'll need to take to prepare your living space for its newest addition. Here are just four things that you'll need in stock as a cat owner.

1. Litter Box

This is one of the most important purchases that you'll need to make before you bring home your new cat. However, there's more to the process than just buying a plastic container and filling it with litter! You'll also need to consider things like size, shape, depth and material type. If it's a covered box, you'll need to think about the safety of its access points. Will it be easy to clean? Will it stain? Will it stink? Don't forget to look into the different types of litter, too.

2. Food

What kind of food should you buy for your feline? For starters, you'll want to get something that's made specifically for kittens. They have different dietary needs than adult cats, and you don't want to upset their stomachs. As for brand, you'll need to do some research to figure out which kinds are safe, tasty and nutritious. Steer clear of anything cheap or generic; even if you're on a budget, your cat's food should be one area where you make an investment in quality.

3. Medication

Your kitten might have medical issues when it comes home from the shelter, especially if it's a rescue. Your vet might also recommend that you start them early on things like flea or heartworm medication. Make sure that you have a comprehensive talk with the experts about these things; you don't want to force your kitten to take something that it doesn't need. Not only will this be traumatic for them, but it might have serious consequences for their health down the line.

4. Toys

With so many different cat toys on the market, it can be hard to decide which is right for a kitten that you haven't even brought home yet. You might want to hedge your bets and buy a variety of toys as "testers" to see which ones that your new cat actually likes. She might be a fan of strings and feathers that she can chase across the room; she might prefer soft, cuddly stuffed animals that make her feel safe in her new home.

These are just a few things that you'll need to prepare your home for a new kitten. For more tools and supplies, shop for cat products online from a trusted trailer.

You're officially a cat owner! Have fun!
