How To Help a Child Who Has Sensory Issues

If you have a child in your life who is dealing with sensory issues, you know how important it is to help them to learn to navigate the world around them. There have been many advances in the treatment of sensory issues in recent years, thanks in large part to the research and other work that is being done by physical and occupational therapists, among other people. You may not know how to begin to help your child deal with his or her sensory issues, but luckily there are now many tools that are available to you.

First, you should talk to your child's physical or occupational therapist or therapy team leader about getting the tools that are right for your child's needs. Every child with sensory issues has slightly different problems, so no single treatment is just right for every kid. Your child may benefit from something like a special needs swing , which will give them vestibular and other sensory help. Or, they may benefit from other tools, such as balls and steps to practice balance, or headphones to help them block out annoying and difficult sounds.

Then, it is important that you talk to the other adults in your life about the situation that your child is in. You will need to fully understand your child's needs as much as is possible so that you can help them to navigate the world around them. Do they know how to communicate to you when they are getting overwhelmed by all of the sights and sound of the world around them? Do they have the tools that they need to be able to cope with the sensory challenges that they are facing? Make sure that the answer to both of these questions is yes.

Finally, take time to give your kid a little extra love. Dealing with sensory issues can be tough, but you shouldn't let it take over your life. Set aside time to spend with your child that can be fun.
