Nonnas Movie Review: A Heartwarming Ode to Family, Food, and Healing

Nonnas, is a heartfelt movie starring Vince Vaughn and Joe Manganiello that serves up Nonna like portions of nostalgia, love, and Italian comfort food.  Inspired by the true story of Joe Scaravella’s Enoteca Maria restaurant in Staten Island it is a love letter to family traditions and the power of shared meals. I loved it and teared up four times in the first 20 minutes as I reminisced about family dinners at my your grandma’s table. This movie perfectly captures the family essence of many families but especially Italian family life.

Nonnas follows Joe Scaravella (Vince Vaughn), a man dealing with grief after losing his mother and grandmother, who were the heart of his Italian-American family’s kitchen. Wanting to honor their memory, Joe starts making their recipes from memory and giving his food to his friends and coworkers as he tries to capture the love cooks give when people enjoy their food as well as the love they put into it. He sees a restaurant for sale and uses his mother’s inheritance to open Enoteca Maria, a restaurant staffed by Italian grandmothersor “nonnas” as the Italian’s call them each bringing their regional recipes and personalities to the table. The film weaves Joe’s journey of healing, the nonnas’ rediscovery of purpose, and the rekindling of old connections, coupled with a bowl of steaming pasta and warm, familial chaos.

The opening scene really resonated with me and paint a vivid picture of Joe’s childhood, filled with bustling family gatherings and his nonna’s “Sunday gravy.” These montages, featuring close ups in delicious sensory detail like fresh zeppole and hand-cut tagliatelle, just speak of the longing for the comfort of home like the dinners we all miss at our grandma’s table. The movie transitions from adorable memories of Joe’s childhood to Joe’s lonely present at his mother’s funeral, setting the stage for a story about “feeding your grief” through food and community.

The movie’s greatest strength is tapping  into the ache for lost loved ones and simpler times. The nonnas—played by Susan Sarandon (Gia), Lorraine Bracco (Roberta), Talia Shire (Teresa), and Brenda Vaccaro (Antonella)—are the soul of the film. I loved their scenes. Their chemistry is electric, from the bickering over Bologna versus Sicily recipes or sharing a tipsy limoncello.  I was really moved by the scene, where they toast to “living our lives very well,”. Tears streaming down my face it felt like a hug that nourished my soul and celebrated the wisdom and vitality of older women often overlooked in cinema.

Vince Vaughn’s Joe was a quiet, authentic portrayal of grief and hope. His sincerity grounds the film, making Joe’s mission to recreate his family’s table relatable to anyone who’s ever longed for connection. The cast also included my favorite Joe Manganiello as Joe’s supportive friend Bruno.

The food itself is almost a character, with yummy visuals of gnocchi, capuzzelle, and cannoli that left me hungry and nostalgic. table”).

While Nonnas was wonderful to me in its quiet beauty others it predictable and lacked depth. There was also a romance between Joe and an old flame Olivia that while sweet, lacked the spark to fully captivate. But I don’t agree with the critics who wanted more backstory or more of Joe and Olivia. For me it was about Joe wanting, starting the restaurant, the setbacks and ultimately the success.

Nonnas captures how food ties us to our roots, much like your memories of gathering around the table. The film’s message, “Food is love,” resonates deeply, as Joe and the nonnas transform grief into a celebration of heritage.

Nonnas is a feel-good film that delivered a warm, nostalgic tribute to family, food, and resilience and I can’t wait to watch it again.

Portal Runner Is A Different Holiday Movie! #portalrunner

After this will people be having the same argument they have over Die Hard Being A Christmas Movie? I guess time will tell.

The 411:

The movie has a solid start. Traveling between parallel timelines or universes sounds fun but what if you are trying to escape someone trying to hurt you?

Nolan is a teenager trying to enter a mirror in order to escape something apparently evil and dangerous. When he finally goes through he is in his room but now has an older sister Mae,  he never had before. She knows who he is but she has never been in his prior universes?

Could his sister Mae be the key to stop running?

I enjoyed it. A bit hokey with the siblings talking through shards of glass to communication but it was sweet too with quirky uncle getting ready for Y2K, mom who just wants her family together, Mae going through some teen situation and Nolan trying to keep everyone safe.

Worth a watch.

Night House Was Creepy AF. #TheNightHouse

The 411

Horror/thriller film about a woman (Rebecca Hall) haunted by vivid nightmares and visions after her husbands suicide. Rebecca gives a solid performance as the grief stricken wife.

Beth’s husband killed himself and not only is she still reeling from his loss but she is suddenly getting visions, hearing things, having nightmares, seeing things and even getting text messages from him.

She finds another house that mirrors hers across the lake and realizes there was a side of her husband that she never knew.

I absolutely love this movie and I think that has everything to do with Rebecca Hall and her emoting. We watch many horror/thrillers with tons of blood, jump scares and things that go bump in the night. I found this way creepier.

This is a must see. Keep a light on!

Time Now - An Amateur Review #timenow #eleanorlambert

The 411:

From Dark Star Pictures TIME NOW, writer/director Spencer King’s highly anticipated new mystery-thriller was released at this year’s Austin Film Festival (October 21- 28). Now in theaters and released On Demand you have the chance to see it.

Claudia Black and Eleanor Lambert made this movie worth it. Solid performances from both.  A dismal story about a single mother returning home due to the sudden death of her twin brother. The movie focuses on why she left and her trying to piece together what happened to him. While the pace was slow to get moving, the scenes with Claudia and Eleanor saved it for me.

The ending surprised me and I was left wondering why? A mother’s reason should always be her child and I felt that she was setting her own little family up a dismal circle of existence.

Dolly The Ultimate 6 DVD Collection

I starting watching this last week. I am a huge Dolly fan from way way back. Her albums were some of the first a bought with my own money after I got my first job.

They include Dolly’s Variety Show that was on TV in the 80s, which I had even forgot existed, Live Concerts, Music Videos, Interviews and more.

The 80s was filled with variety shows were you could see your favorite celebrities doing skits, talking, singing and acting. I loved them all.

Here are some highlights:

Where else are you gonna see Dolly in a bubble bath or the Dolly Dating segment with a very young, Moonlighting Bruce Willis. Was he cute or what!?.

We All Think We’re Special Was Gut Wrenching

The 411:

There is so much to love about this movie. The acting is incredible with Jared Bankens (Charlie) and William McGovern (Ed) pretty much  carrying the whole movie in basically one set (Charlie’s  Mother’s Home).

The script was witty, smart and delivered perfectly.  Jared as The highly educated drunk, tormented by his past and addiction was amazing. If nothing else, see this film for the acting chops and the cool split screens. I really enjoyed it. Addiction is not pretty but neither is detoxication and everyone did an amazing job! I highly recommend.

Road Head Is A Party Screener & Review

The 411:

This was fun! I haven’t been so entertained in a long time.  It loved the campiness of it. So stupid but so good.  The jokes aren’t always hysterical but the characters are just lighthearted enough to not get on my nerves.  Bloody good time and most of the movie takes place on a blank dry earth landscape.

Just Finished The Voices Available NOW On Demand

The 411:

I have watched some bad horror movies. This was not one of them! Lily has suffered more trauma than anyone. She is blind and orphaned. She starts hearing voices and doesn’t realize that these voices don’t belong to the living.  The synopsis doesn’t do the movie any justice. I loved the main character Lily. Lily now a psychiatrist is helping a little girl who lost her mom. This scene takes us into how Lily lost her mom. We learn a lot about Lily in flashbacks,

As a child everyone assumed Lily was speaking to imaginary friends. Her doctor gives her headphones to drown out the voices. She hears voices all the time and since she is blind doesn’t know they are not really there. She meets a little girl who Is looking for her cat, we can see she is an undead based on her clothes, Lily just hears a little girls she is trying to help.

One of Lily’s patients tells her that she needs Lily to pick the soul of her recently deceased son before Lily hears the heartbeat of her own unborn child Lily’s. Suddenly every dead walker wants to be Lily’s unborn child.

The Director didn’t spend enough time on Lily’s aunt’s illness and I wondered why Lily forgot all the voices she heard as a child and young adult to not realize that this is what was happening to her again but I guess we wouldn’t have a movie then.

It was enjoyable.

Our Four Kids and It Movie Premiere Reunion With Friends

The 411:

I love my daughter’s friends so I invited them over for a movie review/lunch/reunion get together. They were very happy for the opportunity to hang out and when lunch and snacks are provided it is an easy sell.

We Door Dashed lunch and since it is impossible in my neck of the woods, I used my work address and met them in the parking lot.

Getting them to stop talking at the table took some time. It has been months since they have been together but eventually they all came over to the living room.

I put a blanket down on the floor so that the kids could maintain social distancing but they all ended up on the blanket eventually.

Sooo these kids are ages, 14, 15 and 17 so they are not necessary the age group the film makers had in mind but it was so fun listening to these kids talk about the movie as we watched.

A couple meet at a vacation home with their kids but the kids don’t know these two have been dating. Both sets of kids have been hoping for the family to get back together. Needless to say the kids are upset, disappointed and kinda pissed off. As a parent I couldn’t imagine doing this to my kids. Springing a boyfriend/girlfriend surprise on them while they are hoping their families get back together would not have been my route but you do you.

Tony immediately decided  the storyline arc only 10 minutes into the movie.

The teens had a good time laughing and talking about the families.  They were concerned that there were a few times the parents were a little to frisky to be a kid movie but I told them it was fine it was only because they were older that they got the couple sinking down below the counter in the kitchen or laying on the beach waiting for their opportunity to be alone. They were also concerned that the parents never seemed very worried that the kids were gone for long periods of time. I honestly had a blast listening to them and haven’t laughed that hard in a long time. It was the perfect way to spend the day.

The movie is perfect for a family movie and I think that these kids will be talking about it for a long time. As I drove them home they were talking about it although their review wasn’t stellar after seeing it. Teens are funny like that.

Tony’s review immediately after watching. He is 15 years old.

“Why? Was the camera so bouncy? Couldn’t they put it on a tripod. It made me crazy how jumpy it was. There are parts in the movie that I don’t think are kid friendly although the youngest kid had one of the best lines, “my father left us for a 20 year old with a tight tushy.

The antagonist was baffling. The villain didn’t have a single good line in the entire movie. The only comedic relief came at the 3rd act where birds pooped on his head as he was climbing up a cliff.“

Tony when It first came on the screen

Personally I think the kids had a great time and they have some inside jokes that they were saying will last them a lifetime “suckable toes” (The creature had toes that they could not stop discussing).  So while I agree with some of Tony’s insight I myself LOVE Russell Brand. I also loved the magic moments that the kids had in the movie and think families will find it hysterical that the “IT” needs to puff up to grant a wish.  I found it cute and told the kids that if they had a good time, it was a good movie.

Alex and Me Review #AlexandMe

The 411 by Maria:

This is a cute, feel good movie that isn't cheesy. My kids loved it as much as I did. Reagen has a lot of things going for her. She is obviously a good soccer player who has the skills and the desire to make it big but when she doesn't make the team coupled with her brother getting a football scholarship and what she believes to be all of her parents attention she decides to take down all her Alex Morgan stuff. When a poster won't come off the wall she climbs on a chair and falls off hitting her head. It is Alex who is talking to her when she comes to.

She is the only one who can see Alex and is excited when Alex tells her she will help her train. Thanks to her new "friend" she gets joins a team called The Breakaways and with her skills and Alex talking in her ear takes them to a whole new level with the help of her dad and her idol.

I loved how Dad comes forward to help The Breakaways form a solid team even though he was thrust into the role of coach. I also loved how Reagen's brother uses his good fortunate to thank his sister for helping him. Perception is everything and family communication is important. This was very realistic especially in the fact that mom and dad seem oblivious to Reagen's issues because she wasn't really communicating how much she needed more.   Families don't always talk open enough so that everyone is getting what they need.

Some of my favorite scenes were when Reagen was talking or hanging with Alex but no one else saw her. Fun and perfectly kept to a minimum so as not to let Reagen play the fool.

Another Holiday Movie You Should See! Annie Claus Is Coming To Town

The 411 by Maria:

I will admit I am a sucker for holiday movies. There is nothing I don't like about them so I am going to start with this originally aired on the Hallmark Channel last year, 2011. There now you know it is a lovely, beautiful story full of heart that didn't intend on becoming an Oscar winner.

We follow Annie as she heads into the big world away from the North Pole and her parents Santa and Mrs. Claus (played by Vicki Lawrence which I was so excited about. I was a huge fan of the Carol Burnett Show growing up and think Vicki looks exactly the same) to see if taking over the family business is really what she wants. It is a rite of passage and is taken very seriously with a globe and a dart. Her mother is excited for her because this was how she met Mr. Claus and loves that her daughter is ending up in sunny California. Annie, played by the adorable and perfectly cast Maria Thayer (who I researched after watching to see she has been in so many things I have seen before but had no idea while watching.) heads to California but has no idea that someone back home does not want her to come back and have devised a plan to keep her in Cali!

Sweet movie with a great cast. You can't help smiling at Annie's sweetness and need to help others. After all, kindness and being a do-gooder runs in her family. I guess I was surprised that she was written to be gullible and vulnerable being that Santa apparently sees you when you are good or bad but it worked allowing for a sweet, family friendly holiday movie.

A Must See: Stunning Performances by All Star Cast!

The 411 by Maria:
This is an absolute must see movie. A+ cast! Stellar performances by Anna Paquin and J Smith Cameron. Paquin plays Lisa a 17 year old girl high school student and lives in Manhattan with her mother (Cameron) and brother. Smart script and dialogue about how life chews us up and spits us out.

When Lisa sets out to find a cowboy hat, she inadvertently causes the death of a woman crossing the street.

Guilt and frustration alters her already "too smart for her own good" youthful view of the world.  The movie takes its time and centers around complex day to day issues; death, hatred, real world events like 9/11, racial differences, teen pregnancy, drugs and divorce. Sounds like a devastating film? It isn't it is a centered, deep, thought provoking movie of the realities of the world our children are growing up in and how it affects them.

So well done, I will be thinking about it for days.

Anna Paquin and J. Smith Cameron along with the rest are incredible. Brilliantly acted! The scene of the bus accident is a harsh reality and Paquin will never be just Sookie to me again!

FYI: Not a child friendly film. Nudity, harsh language and a bloody accident add to the movie and are not there for dramatic visuals.

Take Me Home Tonight Review

What I Can Tell You:
My niece came over and we watched it together. It was a fun movie and my husband came out to tell me he could hear us laughing from three rooms away. Mostly, we enjoyed the awkwardness that Topher seems to pull off with complete ease. Personally, I loved the soundtrack.

My Thoughts on Vanity Fair

What I Can Tell You:
I may be the only book lover that has never read Vanity Fair so I had no idea what to expect. This was a fun movie to watch. It was a perfect way to spend a rainy day with the kids involved in their games, I sat at the computer and wished I had someone to watch it with.

Becky Sharp is one naughty girl. She cracked me up from the beginning of the movie when she told off the school marms of Miss Pinkerton's Academy for Young Ladies. I knew from that moment, I was going to love her. The story is good. The writing, well, obviously the book is a classic for a reason. The characters are fleshy and real. I never thought the movie boring considering it is a BBC and not a big budget, extravaganza, full of action like I usually watch. The dialogue is what makes this so awesome. There is a ton of witty banter that made me smile through much of the movie.
I also love Amelia Sedley who is horribly in love with George Osborne but has a puppy dog secret admirer in his friend, William Dobbin.

The characters are well acted.  The clothing and set amazing. The production a bit bland but it was perfect for this book adaptation which was written in 1847.

If you love the classics, you will love spending a few hours with Vanity Fair on DVD.

Hoodwinked on Blu-ray And DVD on February 15th

I liked the movie and appreciate the character styles and pop culture references. Goddess and I watched it three times in a week, so obviously she liked it too! Not your typical cartoon. Very well done. Witty and very well voiced. My favorite character was the Andy Dick voiced Bunny while my 5 year old love Twitchy.

Personally, I liked it better the 3rd time I watched it. The first two times, I felt there was too much down time and less laughs than I expected.

Good for the whole family and everyone will have a favorite character and enjoy their character's take on what happened.

Thursday Thirteen - #5 - 13 Favorite Movies

13 movies I could watch over and over (in random order). This lists to me shows what a pathetic romantic I am well, minus Saving Private Ryan.

Saving Private Ryan - Just a good movie all around. I love the acting, the visuals, the storyline, the message of honor and duty. Tom Hanks best movie.

The Notebook - What can I say. This is such a beautiful story about beautiful people in a beautiful landscape. This is a timeless love story.

One Fine Day - What more do you need besides George Clooney? George is just plain hot!

Interview with a Vampire - Long haired Brad, Tom and Antonio wearing gothic clothing and biting women is enough for me.

Titanic - Leo, Kate, a ship and icy water. The making of an incredible movie. Beautiful set, believable acting and a historical tragic story. The sinking scenes are horrific and still make me stop breathing. As annoying as it is that Kate took up that damn floating door with no room for Leo, I still believe this movie is one of the best love stories out ever.

Young Frankenstein - Bwwaaahhhh...love me some Mel Brooks. This 1974 movie is one of my favorites because my family can get together this many years later and still laugh about lines in the movie. Mel is a comedy genius and this movie will always be on my top movie list.

Great quotes
Igor: You know, I'll never forget my old dad. When these things would happen to him... the things he'd say to me.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: What did he say?
Igor: "What the hell are you doing in the bathroom day and night? Why don't you get out of there and give someone else a chance?"

Frankenstein, Igor and Inga in front of HUGE castle doors]
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: What knockers.
Inga: Oh, thank you doctor.

Froederick and Igor are exhuming a dead criminal]
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: What a filthy job.
Igor: Could be worse.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: How?
Igor: Could be raining.
[it starts to pour]

Meet the Parents - My husband and I still laugh over this movie. Ben Stiller and his easy humor is brilliant. He and DeNiro together had great slapstick comedy timing. Really funny movie.

Meet Me In St. Louis - I adore Judy Garland and fine this to be one of the best musicals. The music and the story is timeless and I wish they were still making movies like this.

My Fair Lady - My all time favorite musical. I love all the songs and who doesn't adore Audrey and Rex? The original Pretty Women with classic songs. A beautiful love story.
My favorite song from the movie.
The Sound Of Music - This was a movie that I watched every year when I was growing up and this year I watched it with my 2 year old daughter. I was so happy that she wanted to watch it. I love the songs, Julie Andrews and I totally wanted to be a Von Trapp kid when I was growing up.
Dirty Dancing - Is there really anyone who doesn't love this movie? We all wanted to be Baby and dance and more with Johnny. I want to spend my summer at a camp with someone who looked like him. Talk about a good summer! Come on, the line..."nobody puts Baby in the corner?" and all that dancing is just good for the heart.

From Dusk Till Dawn - Again Clooney is in it with a nice neck tat. Love it! Vampires and Clooney holding a gun, makes this girl happy. Oh and my girl crush Salma Hayak is in this also in one of the hottest girl scenes ever.
