A Guide to Giving a Thoughtful Gift

As the festive season swiftly approaches, everyone is thinking long and hard about what to get their nearest and dearest in terms of gifts. This does not necessarily have to mean spending a fortune on the latest fashion or gadgets. Rather, the focus should be on putting plenty of thought into the gift, as well as into its presentation. Here is a quick, yet comprehensive guide to giving a thoughtful gift.

Personalize it

Why buy someone a pair of socks when you can buy them a pair of socks with their favorite TV show characters printed on them? Why buy them a plain blanket for the living room when you can buy them one of the unique memory blankets made out of their loved one’s old T-shirts?

Take the time to think about what makes the gift receiver unique, what they like, what they enjoy doing, and what means the most to them. Then consider your gift giving options from there. If the gift reflects them in some way, it will be a lot more meaningful and appreciated than a generic gift that any acquaintance could have bought for them.

Pay attention

As the holidays edge ever-closer, really pay attention to the things that your friends and family members are saying. Perhaps your best friend’s juicer recently broke and they cannot afford to buy themselves a new one? Or maybe you notice that a stylish pair of shoes have caught your daughter’s eye in the window of a store downtown? In some cases, your loved ones might even purposefully drop hints relating to their Christmas wishes – so prick up your ears and start taking notes!

Plan in advance

There are many advantages to planning a gift in advance. First and foremost, it means that you will have plenty of time to find the right gift at the right price.

Secondly, planning in advance means that you can take extra steps to make the gift special, such as buying a few small stocking stuffers to complement the item that you have chosen. For example, if you have bought a printer for a close friend who has recently started their own at-home business, you could purchase ink, toner, and other office stationery as stocking stuffers.

Put some effort into the packaging

A shoddily wrapped gift just won’t do. If you are keen to make someone feel truly special, it is important to pay attention to what’s inside the packaging, as well as the packaging itself. Start by investing in some lovely Christmas wrapping paper and adding an eye-catching finishing touch with a shiny ribbon or a bow. If your gift-wrapping skills simply aren’t up to scratch, rather spend a little extra to have the item wrapped by a professional or spring for a pretty Christmas gift bag or gift box instead.

Giving thoughtful gifts should be a priority for everyone. After all, seeing the joy on your friends’ and relatives’ faces is what makes the festive season so festive!
