Time for...The Interview!

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I got married in June last year to a lovely young man and came to the Big Apple from sunny little Island, Singapore which is a more than 24 hours flight away to join the love of my life here in the city. I’ve been making Jewelry for about 7 years as a hobby, I simply love fashion too but fate had it that I was a Financial Advisor for the past 3 years till I quit to become a Jewelry Designer full time now in New York.

One of my biggest loves aside from Fashion is Music. My mom was a piano teacher and I think that has cultivated my love for Jazz and therefore the swing era. Perhaps that also influenced my obsession for anything old and vintage as I am fascinated by how beautiful women with big flowers in their curly hair and lacy dresses were in the 1950s.

How was your shop started?

When I was still studying in Singapore I put some of my designs in shops under consignment but my job as a Financial Advisor after I graduated did not allow much time for my creativity so my left brain stood still for a few years. Till mid last year when I started contemplating quitting my job, I started selling my designs at some weekend bazaars. A lot of my customers asked me If I had a shop or a website and the answer was always ,“ coming soon”. Till I moved to New York Christmas last year, I started listing items on my website on the 10th of January and my story begins.

Where do you get your inspiration?

I don’t normally have something that inspires me before I start a piece. I travelled quite a bit the past 2 years and have collected a number of very unique vintage brooches or fabric buttons that I have come across and I always let those pieces speak to me. I start by cutting off a few feet of wire, twisting them around onto the pieces and I let my pliers led the way.

What do you love most about what you do?

I have asked myself so many times if I made a mistake in quitting a job that was so financially rewarding to simply just create and create beautiful pieces of Jewelry and Accessories. But the answer is that it is simply because it is Me. What I love most about what I do now is that I can now be myself, and I can now be Happy even though my bank account might not agree. I believe happiness is what keeps us alive.

In ten years I want to…………………
Definitely have my own brick and mortar shop. I must admit that I really love people and my customers. I have a need to interact with them personally. And of course, it would be nice to have a shop I can call, “ My Own” .
