Book Review: The Mortician’s Revenge by Maralee Lowder

The Mortician’s Revenge by Maralee Lowder is a book two of The Mortician’s Wife, continuing the eerie saga set in the haunted mortuary of Dunsmuir, California. As a fan of the first book, I enjoyed diving back into this gothic, horror revenge world,

The story picks up with the same atmospheric dread and evil tied to the old mortuary and its dark history. Lowder’s strength lies in her vivid storytelling, and she delivers unsettling moments that build on the supernatural elements introduced in the first book. The concept of the mortician’s malevolent spirit influencing new victims is compelling, and the pacing keeps you hooked. The writing is engaging, blending human cruelty and supernatural terror, though I noticed some reviews mentioning spelling issues, which occasionally disrupted the flow for me too it didn’t take away from this horrifying story.

If I compare this to the first book, The Mortician’s Wife, this book felt less cohesive. The first novel’s emotional depth, particularly through Ada and Emily’s relationship, gave it a haunting resonance that I found lacking here. The Mortician’s Revenge leans heavily on plot twists and shock value, but some parts felt like filler, dragging out less essential moments while skimming over potentially richer storylines. The shift in focus from the personal stakes of the first book to a broader, more chaotic narrative made it less emotionally gripping.

Unlike the cliff hanger of the first book that forced me to buy the second book I am still undecided if I need to read the third book.

Lowder’s writing shines, and fans of gothic horror will appreciate the creepy ambiance and imaginative scares. My favorite parts were Emily and Ava and their relationship beyond the grave. I loved them both in book 1 and wish there was more of them. If you loved The Mortician’s Wife, this is worth read.

Moana 2 Review: Stunning Visuals, Forgettable Songs, and a Missed Opportunity

I finally sat down with my daughter excited to watch Moana 2 last night with high hopes, expecting a sequel that would capture the heart and soul of the original. We waited a long time for the second movie.  We loved the first seeing it over 8 times. The first Moana was a near perfect blend of vibrant Polynesian culture, unforgettable music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and a deeply emotional journey of a young girl who cares about her people but has dreams of her own. Unfortunately, Moana 2 falls short of that magic, leaving me disappointed despite its jaw-dropping animation. While it’s not a bad film, it felt hollow echo, with a soundtrack that fails to resonate and a story that’s already fading from my memory.

Let’s start with the undeniable highlight; the animation. Moana 2 is a visual masterpiece. The ocean, a character in its own right, shimmers with breathtaking detail its waves crash with intensity, and its bioluminescent glow is mesmerizing. From the lush greenery of Motunui to the stormy chaos of the high seas, and omg the lighting every frame is a testament to Disney’s technical teams. The studio’s work, combined with hand drawn elements like Maui’s animated tattoos, creates a spectacle that demands to be seen on the big screen. I was floored by the sheer beauty of it all, and it’s the one aspect that truly lives up to the original’s legacy.

But where Moana 2 stumbles is in its music and narrative, and the absence of Lin-Manuel Miranda is painfully felt. The original’s soundtrack were emotional powerhouses; think “How Far I’ll Go” and “You’re Welcome”.

“What’s beyond that line, will I cross that line?” “I Am Moana” is a triumphant, tear-jerker about her journey, blending ancestral voices with her self-realization.

“You’re Welcome” has Dwayne Johnson’s charisma and a hook that’s impossible to shake.

These earworms burrowed into your heart, carrying Moana’s dreams and struggles with every note. Miranda’s lyrics were clever, emotionally rich, and as a preschool teacher who heard my class play and sing those original songs every day, I can tell you they stuck with you.  In contrast, the songs in Moana 2, penned by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear.  Tracks like “Beyond” and “Can I Get a Chee Hoo?” are pleasant enough but lack the depth or staying power to linger. I can’t remember a single song right now which is a huge contrast to the first film, where I couldn’t stop singing for days. The songs don’t evoke the same sense of longing, triumph, or cultural resonance, and they fail to propel the story forward with any emotional weight. We felt they were there just to movie the story along and bored us.  It’s a crushing disappointment, especially knowing Miranda was busy with Mufasa: The Lion King and unavailable due to the film’s origins as a Disney+ series.

The story itself is another weak point. Set three years after the first film, Moana 2 follows Moana (Auliʻi Cravalho) as she answers a call from her ancestors to find the lost island of Motufetu and break a curse to unite the ocean’s people. She reunites with Maui (Dwayne Johnson) and assembles a crew of new characters, including Loto, Kele, and Moni. My daughter and I were confused to the motley crew who made her voyage more difficult. There was little emotional depth and while we appreciate her relationship with her little sister our eyes rolled at the little sis/big sis segments. We did love grandma visiting to ground Moana through the start of her journey but with that said I barely remember the details already, which is telling for a movie I watched just last night. The new characters are charming but one-dimensional, and even Maui, while still voiced with Johnson’s aggro charm, feels underused or overly goofy at times!

Cravalho remains a standout, her voice now richer at 24, reflecting Moana’s growth into a confident wayfinder and her performance is one of the film’s saving graces.

Ultimately, Moana 2 feels like a missed opportunity. The animation is gorgeous, Miranda’s absence is a glaring flaw his knack for crafting emotionally resonant, culturally authentic earworms could have elevated this sequel to greatness. If you’re a fan and saw both what did you think?

Book Review: The Mortician’s Wife by Maralee Lowder

Purchase

Maralee Lowder’s The Mortician’s Wife is a chilling but deeply moving story that blends gothic horror, heartfelt emotion, and an intriguing narrative that has me chomping to buy book 2. This novel delivers a creepy atmosphere using the reportedly haunted Old Mortuary in Dunsmuir, California as Lowder write a chilling tale of abuse yet resilience, and unlikely friendship.

Written in the perspective of Emily who we meet as a youngster and eventually a mature woman who becomes a nurse the story follows Ada the mortician’s wife as she tells Emily her life story.

Ada was once a young woman who married a charismatic but sinister mortician Horace, only to endure years of torment at his hand.

Lowder brilliantly wrote a decades-long bond with these two woman that keeps you hooked as she shifts between the two timelines of Ada. The real-life inspiration of the haunted mortuary adds an eerie authenticity, making the story feel unnervingly real.

What makes this book stand out is its emotional depth. Ada’s suffering is portrayed with raw honesty and her strength and quiet defiance make her a character you root for and fall in love with. The friendship between Ada and Emily, built on shared moments of music and storytelling, is the heart of the novel, offering warmth among the darkness. The gothic light tone, balances human horror; spousal abuse and betrayal with the supernatural, creating a story that’s as unsettling as it is touching.

The vivid characters, haunting setting, and Lowder’s skillful storytelling make The Mortician’s Wife a captivating read. If you love creepy, atmospheric tales with a heartfelt core, this book is a must read!  I loved it for its ability to both chill and move me and I will be buying book 2 in the series.

Rating: 5/5 stars

Perfect for fans of gothic horror, paranormal mysteries, and stories of human resilience.

Wolf Man (2025): A Howl That Doesn’t Quite Echo For Me

Wolf Man didn’t do it for me. It’s not a disaster, but it’s a frustrating near-miss. The trailer made me want to see it in the theater but I am glad I saved my money.

Family Under Siege

The movie follows Blake, a San Francisco writer and househusband married to a workaholic journalist and a strained marriage.  When Blake inherits his childhood cabin in rural Oregon after his father’s presumed death, he convinces Charlotte and their daughter, Ginger, to reconnect at his childhood home. Things go wrong fast after a mysterious creature attacks their van scratching Blake. The family runs from a creature to his childhood home and barricades themselves.  As the night progresses, Blake’s behavior turns erratic as he gets sick from his scratch.

The Good

Let’s start with what works. Christopher Abbott is great as loving father Blake. His  performance is raw and carries the movie. He nails the descent from loving dad to tormented monster, with subtle physicality and haunted expressions that make you feel his unraveling humanity. He is vulnerable and menace but the story doesn’t always match his intensity. The film’s early atmosphere is another high point. The moody, shadowy Oregon wilderness feels alive with menace. The practical effects, while not groundbreaking, deliver some wince inducing body horror, like nails peeling and teeth shifting. There was even a jump scare that got my husband and daughter jumping at the same time. I stifled a chuckle.

This werewolf transformation adaption is more viral infection instead of howling at the moon. It seemed very sci-fi almost reminiscent of The Fly. The point of view  shifts, showing Blake’s distorted “wolf vision” and garbled audio, are a clever touch, immersing you in his disorienting change as the woman in his life look grey with lit eyes.

The Bad

Where Wolf Man stumbles is its thin script and pacing. The story leans too heavily on predictable beats and shallow characters. Charlotte, played by a talented Julia Garner (Ozark),  is underwritten—she spends much of the film reacting with wide-eyed fear rather than driving the story. Garner does what she can, but the script gives her little depth, making her feel like a bystander in her own survival tale. Ginger fares better, with young Matilda Firth delivering a heartbreakingly authentic performance as heartbroken girl who loves her daddy.

The film’s themes—generational trauma (my daughter’s assumptions 15 minutes into the movie), fear of becoming your parents, the fragility of family—sound promising but fizzle out. A prologue showing young Blake with his domineering father (Sam Jaeger) sets up a “sins of the father” arc would have been better in a flashback scene because it was resolved too neatly.  The reveal that Blake’s father is tied to the creature isn’t surprising as we figured that out 25 minutes in and the climax feels rushed, with a wolf-on-wolf brawl that’s more distracting than thrilling. At 103 minutes, the film drags in its middle, spending too much time on repetitive tension instead of fleshing out its ideas or characters.

Wolf Man isn’t a bad horror film it was atmospheric, well acted and takes risks but it lacks the formula that would make it soar.  It’s worth a watch for horror fans, especially those who vibe with Director/Writer Whannell’s style or those loving Abbott’s work.

Rating: 6/10 – A solid effort with standout moments, but it’s no masterpiece.

Book Review: When Stars Align – A Promising Start That Fades

When Stars Align caught my eye when it was included in the First Reads free book list on Amazon Prime with its evocative title and a premise that promised a blend of romance, destiny, and cosmic wonder. The book starts strong, pulling readers into a world that made me remember a time when Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and Lindsey Lohan partied together sans underwear while they got in and out of cars and the paparazzi chased them all over Hollywood. I was sucked in from the first few pages however despite moments of brilliance, it struggled to maintain its grip, leaving me wanting more by the end.

The opening chapters are a delight. The author weaves vivid imagery and heartfelt dialogue, creating an immediate connection to our main characters. Their early interactions are electric, with witty banter and a slow-burn tension that felt very authentic. The prose really shined here, depicting scenes so immersive I could almost feel the cool night air and hear the rustle of leaves. These moments of perfection for me, are the book’s greatest strength.

But somewhere around the midway point, the magic starts to wane. The pacing slows, and the plot meanders into repetitive conflicts that took away the initial spark. The characters once so vibrant, fall into predictable patterns, and their decisions sometimes felt forced, as if the story is trying too hard. Subplots introduced to add depth like a mystery or a career dilemma felt underdeveloped. I found my attention drifting, skimming pages in hopes of recapturing the early enchantment.

It’s not that When Stars Align is a bad book; it’s more that it doesn’t live up to its own potential. The writing is polished, and there are fleeting scenes—especially  near the climax—that remind you of the author’s talent. But these highlights are too sparse to sustain the momentum for this reader.

For readers who love character-driven romances with a touch of whimsy, this book might still resonate. For me, though, it was a bittersweet experience although I didn’t give up and read until the last page; it was a story that soared at the start I got bored with the characters. I’d give When Stars Align three out of five stars: a beautiful beginning, moments of brilliance, but a journey that ultimately left me thinking what should I read  next.

Strawberry Mansion: A Mind Bending Dive into Dreams and Defiance

Imagine if your dreams were taxed like your paycheck? As a none dreamer I think I would buy tax exempt but Strawberry Mansion, a 2021 indie movie directed by Kentucker Audley and Albert Birney, spins this premise into a quirky, heartfelt sci-fi adventure that’s as thought-provoking as it is bizarre. And bizarre it is.  I watched this today and will say it’s unlike anything I’ve seen lately—think Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind meets a lo budget Wizard of Oz.

Set in 2035, we  follow James (played by Audley), a suited, stiff auditor of dreams who arrives at Bella’s (Penny Fuller) home to tally up all her unpaid taxes on her subconscious dreams. Bella is an eccentric artist who records her dreams on VHS tapes even though there was a modern tech mandate years earlier.

As James sifts through Bella’s VHS colorful dream archive with the strangest VHS player you will ever see, he is drawn into a surreal world of saxophone-playing frogs, blue demons, and fried chicken ads. He also starts crushing on a younger version of Bella (Grace Glowicki), which adds a tender, time-bending romance to the mix.

What makes Strawberry Mansion shine is its handmade charm. Shot digitally but transferred to 16mm for a grainy, nostalgic vibe, the film is like a love letter to analog creativity.

I felt like this movie is a big F U to the system that tries to monetize our thoughts and “likes”.

Without being preachy, it pokes at consumerism and surveillance of all our media outlets asking: what’s left of us when our inner worlds are up for sale.  As we see everyday in our digital searches or likes and comments.

The plot wobbles a bit in the final act, veering into head scratching territory and much rewinding to see what I missed but the ride is so  fun that I didn’t mind getting lost.

Fuller steals scenes as Bella, her mischievous grin hinting at secrets she’s not spilling, while Audley’s deadpan James grounds all the weirdness with relatable loneliness.

Strawberry Mansion isn’t for everyone! This isn’t clear-cut narratives or blockbuster polish but if you’re into quirky indies this one’s a treat. It’s a reminder to guard your dreams fiercely and maybe unplug from the noise once in a while. Unplug and engage!!!

You can catch Strawberry Mansion on Amazon Prime or VOD Have you seen it yet?Let me know what you think of all the acid dripping imagery like the frogs, wolves, fried chicken, sailor mice and veggies under the sand.

There are a few things aspects of the movie like underdevelopment of the characters or messages but it is still interesting enough for a watch.

5 Heartfelt Birthday Ideas to Make My 20-Year-Old Daughter’s Day Unforgettable

2021

As a proud mama, watching my baby girl turn 20 feels like a whirlwind of emotions. Goddess has been written about on Maria’s Space since she was born, where did the time go? Her birthday is tomorrow, and I want to make it special, filled with love, laughter, and memories we’ll both cherish. Since we love bonding over watching TV/YouTube music-filled drives, thrifting adventures, and cracking up together, I’ve come up with five birthday ideas to celebrate her vibrant spirit (and our favorite shared hobbies!). If you’re planning a celebration for your own young adult, these might spark some inspiration for you too!

1. Throwback TV Marathon Night

Nothing says “us” like hanging out together to watch TV or You Tube and discussing the characters, cinematography or dialogue. For her 20th, I’m planning a throwback marathon of her childhood faves—think Scooby Doo or Wizards of Waverly Place—mixed with a marathon of Bob’s Burgers which we both adore, I’ll set up a snack bar with her favorite treats (popcorn, chocolate, and maybe those strawberry Dubai chocolate cups we raved about last month!). Add some candles and a blanket fort with lots of pillows for that extra nostalgic vibe. We’ll giggle over our Bob Burger sing-a-longs. You must watch it! It’s the best!

Pro tip: Pick a show that makes you both laugh to keep the mood light and joyful!

2. Music-Blasting Road Trip Adventure

We love hitting the road with the windows down, singing at the top of our lungs, so a birthday road trip is a must. I’m thinking a short drive to a nearby town maybe an hour away where we can explore a cemetery we have never walked through or a scenic spot for fun pics. I’ll make a Spotify playlist with her favorite songs which are thankfully mine too! (probably some Billie Eilish or hair bands of the 80s) plus classics we belted out when she was younger. She has a list called “my childhood featuring  Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Bob Segar, and Daughtry. We’ll stop at a thrift store to hunt for vintage treasures. She is a talented picker of cool things.  It’s all about those carefree moments we’ll laugh about later. Pro tip: Pack a Polaroid camera to capture silly candid shots along the way.

3. Thrifting Extravaganza with a Twist

Thrifting is one of our favorite things to do; there’s nothing like finding a gem for a steal! For her birthday, I’m planning a thrifting spree at her favorite local shops, but with a challenge: we each pick out an item for the other as a gift. It’s a special day for me too! I’ll sneak in a small budget for her to score something special, like a piece of jewelry or something for her room. We’ll end with coffee at a cozy café, to discuss our finds. Pro tip: Check thrift stores’ social media for sales to maximize your haul!

4. DIY Memory Scrapbook Party

Since 20 is such a milestone, I want to celebrate her journey so far. We’ll gather photos from her baby days to now (there aren’t many new ones as she refuses to allow pictures) plus mementos like concert tickets or notes she’s kept. I’ll use a lot of my journaling stash cute likestickers, washi tape, and colorful pens for us to decorate pages while we chat and laugh. We can play her favorite music in the background and order food. It’s a sweet way to reflect and bond, and she’ll have a keepsake to look back on. Pro tip: Prep a few photos in advance to surprise her with memories she forgot about!

5. Pamper Day with a Personal Touch

My girl deserves to feel like a queen, so I’ll set up a “mini pamper me” spread with face masks, nail polish, and a hair mask so we can have smooth, soft hair. We’ll watch a feel-good movie (maybe Clueless for that thrifted vibe) and laugh over our face mask look.

Pro tip: Add a scented candle to set a relaxing mood without breaking the bank.

Why These Ideas Work

Turning 20 is huge; it’s the end of her teens and the start of a new chapter. These ideas lean into what makes her light up (and what we love sharing), blending nostalgia, adventure, and heartfelt moments. Whether it’s singing in the car or digging through thrift store racks, it’s about making her feel loved and celebrated. Plus, they’re flexible, you can mix and match based on your budget or time. For me, it’s about seeing her smile and knowing we’ve made another memory together.

What’s your favorite way to celebrate your kid’s big day? Drop your ideas below I’d love to hear how you make those milestones magical! 🎉
