Rediscovering the Art of Letter Writing: A Heartfelt Return to Loved Ones

Yesterday my daughter and I went through a bin of old cards and letters I had in the garage. She organized it into piles and put it all back in the bin in order of who everything was from. Old letters from family, friends and ex boyfriends. Her take away was that as she gets older her generation will not have anything like this to look back on, re-read or share with family.

It's sad and true. No one sends letters anymore. Thankfully I do have a friend who still sends letters and cards but these days and I get so excited when I receive one and add it to my current journal. These days everyone sends texts and it's not like anyone is printing out their back and forth conversations for prosperity.

Looking through the old love letters and retelling stories of people who were a big deal in my life way before she was born was cathartic and fun. I had forgotten some of the letters and others felt like only yesterday I had received them.

There was too much to go through them all because we were organizing and talking but I cannot wait to sit and really read them. Letters from my father who is now gone, cards and postcards I got from my grandparents as they travelled and love letters from ex-boyfriends that made me feel special. Hearing her "geez mom, another name. Another pile!" still makes me laugh right now.

I think sending letters is important and we should make a conscious effort of telling those we love how much we love them in something they can hold and re-read. In the past I have left my kids love letters as I left the house for work and they slumbered on but I think it's time to do this more. We are all getting older and I want her to have the "receipts" of my love in something she can see, hold, and share with her friends and family when I am no longer here.

A New Chapter Begins With A Lighter Heart #faithrenewed #reconciliation

I have prayed alone for 40 years of my life. Being raised Catholic whenever I needed to I turned to God! After having children I decided to let them decide what path they wanted to take. We baptized them both and when they were young. I prayed over them and when they could repeat after me we prayed nightly.  I have spent years going into church often but always off hours just wanting to sit in my own head with my prayers and my very personal relationship with Jesus.

In January of this year I decided to learn to pray the rosary and to read the bible.  It has been interesting and makes me feel really good and close to God which I think is the best reason to pray.

Two months ago I decided to start going to church by meeting up with a friend and her son every Sunday and praying as a community. Goddess has come with me 95% of the time. When I talked about how I sometimes feel guilty that I didn't force religion on her and her brother because life is hard and you may need to have faith and pray but won't know how she said something I will appreciate all the days of my life. "I like the way you did it. Maybe if you had forced it I wouldn't be as interested as I am. I believe there is a higher power and believe in God. I also like aspects of other religions and I am finding my own way."

This past Saturday I finally received confirmation because after reading 33 Days to Eucharistic Glory I really longed to receive the most holy sacrament of the eucharist and longed to be on the line of parishioners.

The priest at my church is fairly new to the priesthood being ordained in 2017. He is a blessing to our community and I adore him. As a child confession seemed so daunting. If you don't know, you walk into a booth and say "bless me father for I have sinned.  It's been ___ weeks since my last confession" and then go into your sins that you want forgiven.  As a child I didn't feel like I had sinned so mostly I just would say I fought with my sisters but what do you say to a priest when it has been 40+ years since your last confession? Also back in the day confession was done with a wall between you and the priest. This time I walked in and he is sitting there. The only thing between us is a table with a lamp and some books on it.

We spoke about my return and since we have talked in the past I felt comfortable and could abbreviate the story. He was unbelievably helpful, forgiving, easy to speak with and then said something thought made me cry. He told me that since it has been 40+ years that he would do my penance. We prayed and then Acting in the person of Christ he told me  "God forgives you. There is nothing else you have to do. you can receive communion tomorrow". I thanked him and we prayed and spoke a moment longer before I said, "don't be surprised if I cry at communion tomorrow." He replied "don't be surprised if I do too."

I am so thankful and feel blessed. Receiving communion was amazing yesterday and I cannot wait to go again.  I know my priest will never see this but I am so grateful to him and his time and sacrifice. He is a wonderful person and every time I talk to him, I feel closer to the Lord!

My Goddess Has Her Driving License

Goddess is now 20 and has a driving license. WOW time flies. When I started this blog Goddess and Handsome were babies. They are now 20 and 22, in college and very much my favorite people. I adore them and I am so proud of them.

Goddess took about a year to finally take her driving test. She wasn't ready and we weren't pushing knowing we would get there when we got there. I kept telling her "as long as it takes, is as long as it takes" and I bet she hates that saying.

When Goddess does anything she really throws herself into it 100%.  Allowing a child to drive you may be easy for some but for me it is hard. It isn't just that I see her as my baby. I am the worst passenger because I like to be in control of my life and prefer to drive. I was always the designated driver when I went out with my friends or a guy because I could trust myself. Sooo when she would constantly see me applying my imaginary break she thought she was doing something wrong and when we finally got home would ask "on a scale of 1-10 how scare were you doing that drive?" I often reminded her that I did that whenever I wasn't the driver and it was not her.

Yesterday Teach cleaned out the car for her, detailing every part of it. He came over to me when he was done and asked if I was ready to go to Goddess so we could GIVE HER THE CAR.

I love and appreciated how he needed me to be there when he finally handed her the key. He had a whole speech for her about making the car her own and that by January/February he expects she would be paying for her own insurance after getting a job. He told her the story of how his dad had done it for him and I just know he was feeling all the feels of his own independence as a young man.

Goddess is NOT ready to drive alone. She knows the car is hers and she can take it whenever she wants but is nervous. I told her she just needs to take that first maiden voyage and she will be fine.

I pray for her safety as she deals with the millions of obvious bad drivers on the road. I see it every day. People seem to not know the rules of the road.

Heavenly Father I place my child in your hands and ask for care and protection as she travels. Surround her with angels and guard her from danger bringing her to safety to her destinations. Grant her wisdom to stay alert and make safe decisions and guide her path with grace. AMEN

God is Good, All The Time,

All The Time, God Is Good!

The Texas Roadhouse Was Amazing

My husband is a guy who likes what he knows. He’s not one who wants to try new things. If it was up to me, we would go somewhere new every time we go out. He likes to try and true so we usually end up at our favorite Mexican restaurant or Outback, basically somewhere basic he’s a basic kind of guy.

He’s not into special foods that are paired together for the pallet and create a magical tasting experience, he likes his diner size portions. The more food the better. He wants to be stuffed and rolling out of there if we have gone out to eat.

We were out and about and I put in Google maps restaurants with a destination of about 10 miles away. A few things came up and I knew that my daughter wouldn’t find anything to eat there. Knowing my husband is very particular I spotted Texas Roadhouse! We had never been there, and when we walked in, we were very excited.

It was a cool place first of all with a moose head on the wall deer heads lots of people. It was packed for 3 o’clock in the afternoon. That’s always a good sign. The first thing they asked was do you wanna pick out your steak? I’ve never been asked that before  so I walked over to the butcher display and peeked! The steaks all looked good to me. I would take any of them so I told them no.

We ordered three appetizers! My son and I got steak and rib combo. My husband got some sort of chicken dish and my daughter got boneless buffalo wings the only wings that she will eat.

All of our meals came with two sides, except for the boneless wings, which was an appetizer and it was all delicious. Not a place that’s close to us. It’s about a 50 minute drive but my husband kept saying I hope it doesn’t get any better because we’ll never come back here. Odd thing to say and the kids asked why he would say such a thing but  I know exactly why he said it.  You can only go down once you’ve reached the top. The Texas roadhouse was definitely for my family, a 9/10.  I loved it. It was a little expensive but we did get a lot of food and I’m gonna talk him into going back. My birthday is in August and this is my pick for dinner.

Have you ever gone to a Texas Roadhouse Restaurant? Even the complimentary rolls and cinnamon butter was amazing.

Heartstrings and Sweet Words: My Daughter's Touching Take On Our Bond

Today my daughter said the nicest thing to me and I need to leave it here forever.

She was talking about a friend who hangs with someone because this friend needs to leave the house once in a while. Her friend doesn't like spending time with this person and complains but will go to their house or take drives with them. I asked why would she torture herself like that if she doesn't like them and she said "She is bored, has bad Wi-Fi and she doesn't have YOU to talk to."

This is probably the sweetest thing she could have said to me.  I mean I try! I believe we have a great friendship and lots in common but never want to overstep what I feel thinking she just deals with me because we are in the same house. It feels so nice to hear. I didn't make much of it in fact didn't say anything about it but my heart swelled.

A Mom's Heartfelt Call to Action for Outdoor Adventures

It’s hard to believe we’re already a few days into March! With promises of warmer weather and the scent of spring in the air, my heart both swells with hope and a little bit of worry. As a mom, I often find myself wrestling with a familiar concern: my kids are spending far too much time in the house. They don't drive yet, do online college and this generation just seems less engaged with others.

This winter felt especially long, and I get it—after a season of hibernation, who wouldn’t want to cozy up with their favorite games or binge-watch a series? But as the daylight hours grow longer and the flowers begin to peek out from beneath the frost, I can’t help but feel the urgency to encourage my kids to step outside their comfort zone and breathe in the fresh air, and to experience life beyond the four walls of our home.

So, how can we embrace the new month and motivate our kids to trade in their cozy indoor corners for the great outdoors? So whether you have big or little kids, here are a few ideas that might just help us all dive deeper into March’s possibilities:

1. Embrace the Great Outdoors:
March can be a transitional month, where winter reluctantly lets go and spring eagerly approaches. Let’s bundle up and head out for nature walks! A simple stroll around the neighborhood or a trip to a nearby park can bring joy and excitement. Let them ride bikes, kick a soccer ball, or simply run freely—how liberating is that?

2. Organize Playdates:
As a mom, I know just how challenging it can be to navigate our kids' busy schedules (and our own!). But let’s be proactive. Take the initiative to arrange playdates with their school friends or neighborhood buddies. Getting kids together allows them to socialize, laugh, and create bonds while enjoying some physical activity. A day at the park, skate rink, or bowling alley can rejuvenate friendships and help them experience the joys of camaraderie.

3. Start a Family Activity Day:
Why not dedicate a weekend day this month to family fun? Plan a hike, have a picnic, or try your hand at geocaching. Involve your kids in the planning—let them pick from a list of outings! Not only will these adventures help my kids forge memories, but it’ll also reinforce our family bonds. Who could resist a day of laughter and fresh air together?

4. Explore Local Events:
March often comes with unique local events. From spring festivals to outdoor markets, it’s worth checking out the happenings in our community. These events not only provide an opportunity for us to mingle with neighbors but also expose our kids to new experiences, cultures, and hobbies. Plus, it’s another adorable excuse to get everyone dressed up and out of the house!

5. Set Screen Time Limits:
As much as I want my kids to explore their interests, I know that moderating screen time is essential. We recently instituted "no screens until after dinner" on certain days, and while there was resistance initially, it has been a game-changer. Instead, they have been diving into board games, reading books, and engaging in creative projects.

6. Lead by Example:
Lastly, I’ve realized that kids often take cues from us parents. If they see us taking walks, gardening, or attending events, they’ll be more likely to follow suit. So, let’s put our phones down, lace up our walking shoes, and show them the beauty that lies beyond the living room couch.

The world is vast, colorful, and full of life. This March, let's prioritize experiences over screens, nurturing our kids’ hearts to explore, learn, and connect in ways that truly matter. It won't always be easy—there will be grumbles and protests—but I know the rewards will be worth it. Here’s to embracing the joys of life outside the walls of home, and nurturing a love for adventure in our precious little ones!

Happy March, everyone! Let’s make this a month of memorable experiences together.

Warmly,
A Hopeful Mama

Blogging Into 2025

Is blogging worth it anymore? This question has been featured on a few sites lately. I don't know but I guess that depends on what you are blogging for.

I started this blog many years ago when my now almost 20 and 22 year old kids were babies. My mom died when I was 12 and I never knew her as a person. I really just wanted to write so they would know who I was. What I thought, how I felt about them. I had about 25K posts until I sat down October, November and December of 2024 and took off a lot of the filler posts. There is no way my kids would ever want to scroll through that many posts. I kept the ones that were more personal, most of my review posts as well as some that I have been paid to post.

Blogging for me is simply about putting down something my kids can read if they ever choose to in the future. Over the past 4 years I really got into Journaling so the blog took a back seat while I figured all that out and I love it!

Now I am just trying to figure out what I really want to talk about on here. Maybe I will just be really personal. Maybe I will just do a photo blog or maybe it will just be a combination as it has always been.

How about you? Do you journal or blog?

Ways To Cut Down On Your Children's Screen Time

Are you sick of looking at the top of your kids head at dinner, in the car, or anywhere else? I know I am! I am even tired of looking at the top of their friend's heads when they come over.  Parents, we are not innocent either. How many of you can say that you are constantly on your phone? Checking Facebook, email, texts, weather, playing a game, reading a book, etc., We are all making connections virtually but isn't it time we make a conscious effort to put those phones down and connect with the people we love!?

My friends and I have been discussing this for a while now. Our kids are on the phone all the time. Not like when we were kids and our parents could tell us it was time to hang up because they needed the phone. There are so many ways for our kids to connect with the rest of the world but NOT with us. Even when their friends come over, I hear zero talking. Why? Because their friends have their faces in their phones.   Even after school I drive one of the kid's  friends home and have to say, "put your phone down" so we can talk.   When did a "play date" become quiet time? When I was a kid if my friend was with me we would never shut up. Now I can hear a pin drop even with three girls in the  house.

My kids do not have actual phones. They have older phones that we no longer have service on that we have allowed them to use if they are able to connect to a network. At home this is easy.  Every once in a while they ask when they will have one like their friends and we tell them it is not necessary at this time and what they have is fine.

I have instituted a schedule for the house where ALL electronics need to be put down for a few hours. Today I have taken Facebook off my phone and will now only get on it when I have a chance to sit at the computer. It takes way too much of my time and while I will miss it eventually I will get use to it.  I hope that by my kids seeing me less on the phone they will follow but I also think all of us need to do this!  In the coming years our kids will be home less and less. Friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, jobs, college, and eventually a career, and family of their own means you will see them less and less. Time flies and we need to spend more time together.

Here Are 4 Ways To Cut Down Your Kids Screen Time:

1. FIRST! Cut down your own time. Spend more time being available and present. We all know our kids learn by example so be the example. Take Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or whatever off your phone.  You may not know everything the moment it happens but you will eventually hear it so it is OK...remove it. I did and it was easy.

2. Do not allow phones or tablets at the table, in the car (unless you are on a road trip over 35 minutes), during a movie, or in the bathroom (Why do we do this? Hanging on the toilet isn't good for anyone).

3. Set Limits - There should always be limits. There is no reason for someone to have their face in the phone all day.  And...make sure they shut their devices down an hour before bed. You can watch TV as a family, read a book, color, draw, or just sit and talk. It is OK to press the power button, we will all be OK. With Windows 10 you can set a timer on your child's computer. I have one on my son's but not my daughter's because she doesn't have Windows 10 yet. It is the best thing I ever did!

4. Keep them busy. Yes! This sometimes means you need to schedule things. It requires work on your part. Watch a movie, play a game, get your sleeping bags and head to the living room floor for a "sleep-over", go outside when the weather is warmer, get on your bikes, go to the park, get involved in a community clean up, volunteer at an animal shelter, clean together, organize closets, drawers, etc. If you are doing it together it goes fast, they stay busy and you have the opportunity to talk about everything and anything.

So, if you are looking for me please text me or better yet call me. I no longer have Facebook on my phone. We should talk. I can't wait to catch up with you.

Christmas is DIFFERENT!

Don’t be fooled. There are many pretty, empty boxes under the tree as well as my family’s gift for our trip to the in-laws on Christmas Day.

It’s funny! No one told me that Christmas would be way different once my kids got older. I mean, I knew it would be different but I didn’t know how sad it would make me.

It was just different

Their lists are smaller.

No one is asking for anything crazy or exciting.

There are no toys to put together.

No one is putting out cookies and milk (this was the first year).

I can put the gifts under the tree as I wrap them instead of hiding them (this was the first year I did this because we were going to be away until the eve so I needed everything done for our return from vacation).

I didn’t need to wait for the kids to go to bed so my husband and I could very quietly make the magic happen.

They woke after 8 and patiently waited until we were all ready with our coffee.

No photos were taken (this was the first year for that too!)

We didn’t record this year’s present opening (this was our first year not doing this as well).

It was just different.

I longed for my kids to squeal in excitement. Hug me after opening each gift, holding this up to show us we they got! They know I already know. I mean they could have showed Dad. He had no idea.

It was just different.

Christmas is different and you have to find something to be excited over. We were going to Universal before Christmas so they kids were told there would only be a few things from their wish lists under the tree. They understood. I didn’t get it for them. I got it for me. I find such joy in watching people open their gifts. It makes me warm and happy inside.

My words to parents….it changes. Kids grow up. Kids find other people to spend time with during the holidays (this hasn’t happened for me yet but I am sure it will). Spend time with friends and family. Do crafts. Bake. Cook. Surprise a neighbor. BUT for now…enjoy every moment with your kids. When you are knee deep in wrapping paper and just can’t put together another toy and there are pieces of toys all over. Sit back and smile knowing you created magic for your kids. You made them happy.

I am not sad! I am just missing their youth! Missing their excitement which means losing my own excitement.

It was a great vacation. we are blessed to have been able to do it. It was a great Christmas. We are thankful to have been able to shop for gifts for our family. We are grateful that our kids are with us. We are truly blessed this year and we don’t take anything for granted. God is good and we are fortunate to spend time together.

My Day With Toddlers

6:30 – 7:00 a.m. • Wakes up, diaper change, sippy with milk (warmed 40 seconds in the microwave) and vitamin, take pacifier. He will usually hand it over when you offer the sippy. The pacifier needs to go away until nap so he doesn’t see it.
• Channel 13 – SESAME STREET
8:00 – 9:00 a.m • Breakfast can be: cheerios, banana or eggs with cheese and bread or anything else you want to make. I usually have a sippy with water out for him at all times.
• Brush his teeth. His tooth brush and paste are in the blue bin on the counter. He doesn’t love his teeth brushed. Let him do it himself and then take over.
9:00 a.m. • Channel 31 – THE WIGGLES – This will give you a half hour of peace. Believe me!
9:30 a.m. • Jesse’s clothes are hanging in his closet.
• His socks are in the bottom drawer of his crib dresser.
• Shoes are not needed unless he is going out.
• Offer a snack, it can be cheese sticks or ham, cheese crackers, Finger Foods in the pantry on the 4th shelf in the pantry
10:30 or 11:00 a.m. • Lunch can be – Ham, mac and cheese (try to put some mixed veggies in it from the freezer), bread, chicken fingers, fries, or anything else you feel like making.
• Jesse will probably bring his sippy to you for milk.
11:45 - 1:00 pm • Nap time – Jesse needs his pacifier and his blue blanket.
• He will lie on the couch with a pillow and you can keep the TV on. He is not used to sleeping with quiet.
• If you lie down with him he will fall asleep faster. If you leave the couch just put a pillow next to him so he doesn’t roll off.
• If you want you can move him to his crib but he sleeps longer on the couch.
2:00 – 3:30 • Don’t let him sleep longer than 2 hours or bed time will be difficult.
• He will sleep anywhere from 1- 2.5 hours if left to his own devices
When he wakes from his nap • Offer a sippy with milk. TAKE PACIFER. He will usually hand it to you when you hand him the sippy.
• You can again offer some kind of small snack.
4:30 – 5:30 • Sometime around this time is a good time for dinner. Dinner can be anything you make but what he mostly likes is, mac and cheese, chicken cutlets, fries, chicken fingers, meatloaf, ham, and try if possible to get some veggies in there.
7:00 – 7:30 • Around this time is a good time for PJ’s it lets him know that bedtime is around the corner. PJ’s are in the third drawer of his crib. Face wash, hand wash and brush teeth if possible. Jesse gets a bath every fourth day because of his eczema. If giving a bath he needs to be moisturized big time The TV and the kitchen light can be on. This lets him know that bedtime is fast approaching
8:00 –8:30 pm • There are no toys taken from the toy chest after 8:00 pm
• BEDTIME
• Jesse listens to music when going to sleep. The CD player in his room just needs to be turned on. He might do this himself for you.
• The lamp on the bookshelf should be on and the overhead light off.
• He will of course need his blanket and pacifier.
• When you leave the room just flip the switch of the camera towards the wall to turn it on. It is all set to go.
• The monitor for the camera is in the dining room on the table. You can put it on the half wall or floor so that you can go about your business while keeping an eye on Jesse. PARTY!

Living With An Autistic Young Man

He won’t let me take his picture!

My son has always been one of the best people I know. He is kind, considerate, loves his family, can talk to anyone and knows everyone on the block. All our neighbors find him polite and sweet. While he is all these things he is also not interested in anything unless it is his interests, doesn’t understand many things, is a gamer who only socializes with fellow gamers but only online. He doesn’t have any “real” friends who are looking for him to do anything except game. The social pragmatic communication disorder is his biggest hurdle.

This weekend we had an argument. We were in the car while I was driving him to his training. He will be working on the weekend starting this weekend. He went through a lot of money in the past three months. ALL of his money from savings and checking. He spent it on what else; gaming. I made him put $100 in each of his accounts using cash he had in his bank so that there would be something in his account.  We have talked about his spending before but I saw that he was starting to take money out again knowing he would have a paycheck soon.

I asked why he was taking money out and he said for lunch. I reminded him that he told me the business provides lunch on Tuesday. He said “Yes, they do provide it but I have to pay for it.” I told him that provides in this context would mean they give you lunch.” Him being able to understand basic things is where his disability is most seen.

He didn’t want to talk about it at all. “You don’t understand”, “You don’t get it.” “I’ve already told you?” “I know what I am doing, etc. I explained that saving his money is important and that although he should be able to spend some on his interests if he ever wants to have his own place, buy things for himself, support himself he will have to learn how to budget and asked him to once again explain what he is spending his money on.

We got heated when he decided not to explain, insisting that he already had and that I don’t understand. My husband is an undiagnosed autistic. I only understood this after my son was 15 and realized that the things I was seeing in my son was also what I was seeing in my husband. The things that my husband said and did that used to break my heart weren’t because of him being an asshole but his social pragmatic issue.

The conversation was heated, my daughter was at a sleepover so I had spent the night with two guys who were not talkers and sit on computers all night. My head hurt from the conversation and the loneliness of being without my daughter so a silent night. I told him that I needed conversation and it was alright to answer my questions, that I am his mother and was asking a legitimate conversation and wanted to understand his side. When he got louder and kept telling me that he was done talking. I said (something I am not proud of) “you know what, I am tired. I cannot live with two people who don’t talk unless they want to. That I understand you both don’t like to talk about things that aren’t interesting to you but I need more conversation. Neither of you  want to do anything but sit at your computer. Neither of you are loving or affectionate.  When your sister leaves, I should just go with her and let you guys figure it all out on your own.”

He told me that was fucked up and I shouldn’t say that. I knew we were getting closer to his job so I tried to de-escalate his mood by telling him how I worried about him and want him to have a good life where he is doing what he wants, his money, friends, a nice place to live.

We had calmed down a bit. It was time for him to get out of the car. He got out and said, “Something you said really fucked up my head!” He slammed the door and walked away.

I want him to be upset. I want to know that he understands the words that I am saying, paying attention to life and not just existing. He heard me. Was it the best conversation we have ever had. NO! I know that. But parenting is not always quiet and perfect. Sometimes it is friggin hard and loud. Sometimes we cannot pussy foot around. He is a 20 year old man in two months. He needs to get out of his little boy bubble where mommy and daddy take care of everything and he just does whatever he wants.

As I drove away, I thought whelp that was something. I had Siri text quick to find out his pick up time and he wrote back 2:30 THEN….

Him: IDK I feel disgusted with myself with how I walked away. That was unnecessary of me.

Me: It’s okay! Don’t worry about it. We were heated and mad. We can talk later.

Him: It’s my own fault.

Me: Sometimes people need to talk honey. They can’t make changes and understand each other without communication.

Him: I Understand but I like care about you deeply. If someone said anything about you I would step in and put them in their place. I love you mom but you don’t have to apologize, it’s not your fault.

(I know this was his understanding about me saying he isn’t loving.)

Me: Thanks honey. We were both heated and not in the best character. I love you and will see you later. Have a good day.

Him: I love you too. Thank you. You too.

The text message warmed my heart because it was such a mature thing to do. We were not talking about what had happened. We were talking about a pick up time. It was important because I know he understood the conversation. He heard me. Really heard me.

When he got in the car later. We hugged. I told him his text was very mature and how proud of him I was that he was able to see that this conversation wasn’t an argument like he thinks all conversations are. That we need to have conversations so we can understand each other.

When we got home we went our separate ways doing the things that needed to be done. He checked in with me a few times. Hanging outside with me. Hanging in my room with me. Conversing about weather yard work, the cats. It is a baby step but I LOVED every moment of our time together. His birth was the best day of my life. He is one of the best people I know. He speaks from his heart and that already is a step above most people.

The Best Homemade Gift I EVER Got

My daughter was asking about gifts for weeks up till Christmas. After telling her I wanted World Peace I mentioned  that her homemade gifts are my favorite.

I love this card she created.

She always told me she doesn’t work well with watercolor but this tells me differently.

What was your favorite gift this year?

Sometimes We Just Have To Breathe

Have you ever just wanted to have the whole world stop so you can focus on nothing at all? It's been happening to me a whole lot lately. I just want to sit back and watch the sunrise, listen to some music and talk about nothing!

That is what I get when I hang with my daughter. Organic conversation that comes from just being in the same space.

Taking that time to just be allows us to breath and shake off the worries and energies surrounding us that may be bringing us down. The ones that weight heavy on us and make us feel as if we are living in constant stress. We aren't. It may sometimes feel that way but it isn't constant. If we allow ourselves the moment to just sit and listen to the world around us, we will see that nothing is constant, life is always moving. We are NOT stuck. We are fluid and the only thing holding us back is ourselves.

Take time to grab a coffee or whatever you enjoy, head out to a beautiful space (it could literally be the side of a nice long road) and watch the sun come up.  Radio on, seat warmer on (on this particular day we needed it), windows down and breathe!!

Camping With My Girl and Some Friends - Day 3

Day 3 is return to life day. Jen had to leave early because she was working. I don’t know how she did it but she loaded up her car, made breakfast and before you know it she and her kids were gone.

This is a pic of my Goddess in the loft area for size comparison. She if 5 feet tall.

We walked around making sure nothing was left behind after loading up the car. Grabbed the garbage and headed out to drop it and the key off. Look at my little genius

I called my son to tell him we were heading home and he told me that he couldn’t wait for us to get home. I asked him why and he said “I miss you.” It hurt my heart! I said, “but you don’t even hang out with us, you stay in your room.” He said, “Yeah but knowing you guys are not here makes me sad.” Awww..BTW...he still hangs in his room. Nothing has changed.

All in all it was a good time away. Fun time with my girl except when she was being a true PITA teen but that is to be expected right?!

So glad we went.

Camping With My Girl & Some Friends - Day 1

We were invited to go camping or glamping if you please since there was a cabin. They were going anyway and asked if we wanted to tag along. With the COVID shut down of everything I really wanted to do something different with my daughter and this was perfect. My son was invited but didn’t want to go which I basically knew would be his answer.  My friend Jen invited us to use the bedroom and she would sleep in the loft with her kids, she also said “don’t bring any food as I am already bringing a ton since we are going anyway“.  I am not picky but my Goddess is so I brought for her and the kids. Grabbed some quick gifts for her kids as well since she wasn’t letting me pay anything, packed up the car and headed out. We were excited to be on an adventure. I am always up for things, my husband is not that guy and for years I have wasted weekends not doing things that would have made me happy because I wanted to be here for him. He is a big boy and can handle whatever and my life isn’t getting any longer so I will be taking these opportunities whenever I can.

They were there before us so when we got there we unloaded the car and while we felt awkward jumped right in. I know them a long time, cat sit for them when they are away but don’t REALLY know them. The kids are nice and my host was very sweet to invite us.

We got there at 2:50, made our bed which we could tell was crappy. Unpacked the food, and went for a walk so they could show us around. There wasn’t much to see. It is an RV Resort and it looked like many lived there year round.

We walked to the park, went to play miniature golf but it was closing and headed back. Jen had ordered wood for the fire pit that never came so the girls set about finding twigs to start a fire.

They did a pretty good job.

We played a card game called Not Parent Approved which is really fun! You need at least 3 people to play it.

We all headed to bed about 11ish. My daughter was watching something on her iPad for a little while. When she finally shut the light out it was so dark in our room. It truly was the darkest of darks. Next to me in the darkness my daughter says, “It is so dark, I don’t even know if my eyes are open.” I still chuckle when I think about it. She had brought a sleep mask for her eyes in case it was too bright since we didn’t know the sleeping situation. She was like, “Well I obviously won’t need my eye mask.” We laugh off and on for 15 minutes until one of us fell asleep. Probably me!

The Night Before We Go Back To School

I have been off with my kids since the second week of March due to COVID close downs. Originally we thought it would be a short time and eventually we found out that schools would not be opening again. I went back to work 2-3 days a week at the preschool I work in May as a Director of the school instead of a teacher.  The kids had hours of school work and eventually in the summer chores. We couldn’t go anywhere due to everything being closed so we basically spent the days together. I loved it. I will never have enough time with them.

The Summer was a hot mess. My daughter waking up anywhere from 12-2:30 and my son playing video games all day in between doing chores. We sat down to read like we do every Summer but neither were into it.

I read a lot, did some journaling, practiced drawing and tried not to waste the days by sitting in front of the TV with my daughter. It is so easy to do that! We like a lot of the same You Tubers.  My daughter managed some sleepovers with her bestie. They are friends since the age of 3. They were in the same preschool. I also took one of her “guy” friends over a few times. I like hanging out with him too. He is a comedian. My face hurts from laughing when I bring him home. My son hasn’t seen anyone except for us and the neighbors as well as his Abuela’s on the one day we visited them and he seems fine with it.

It is the weirdest thing to me that both kids would have been okay if they had not seen friends since March. I have been hearing this from many friends who also say that their kids just aren’t looking for their friends and their friends aren’t looking for them. In the age of electronics, these kids have grown up being able to talk to their friends without Actually being with them. There’s Snapchat, Instagram, Texting, Online Gaming and more. They are talking to them, just not in the same room. So I guess I get it but I don’t!

It is worrisome that they are truly okay being solitary. I am a loner so while I get it, I do enjoy getting together with friends. If this had happened when I was a kid, I would have been so depressed. No computer, no smart phone, no cable. Just the same 12 Channels, none of them came in great and a staticky radio. I would have run out of books the first two weeks and my sisters and I would have killed each other.  We would have however been in the best shape of our lives because we would have been biking every day from morning till night when our parents got home.

Getting the kids back on a schedule is going to be crazy. My husband and I just talked about it. They are going to have to shut the electronics down by 9 and be in bed by 10 and however long it takes you to sleep that is how long it takes. Spend some time thinking!

While I prepare them, I know that my preschool parents are preparing their toddlers to spend the day with me. I need to be rested and ready to get a bunch of kids who have been unscheduled for months, back on a schedule that works with a classroom of 10 - 2-3 year olds. Should be interesting. We will spend the first day learning the rules of the classroom, the importance of hand washing, how to stand in a line as well as do a few first day projects for the parents benefit. I can’t wait to get started.

I wish my kids the very best first day as well as anyone else going back to school whether you are student, teacher, or a parent having to let your little one go for the first time in months. It will be challenging. Expect it but know that they will be great! They need to be in school. School is essential and if we all do the right thing and follow the rules, regulations and guidelines set in place we will all be okay.

Are you Ready!? Me Either!!
