I love Hanging With These Kids

My kids are my favorite people and I often think about the day they won't be in my life because they have moved onto their own "Grown Up" lives. God willing it will happen and I like all other kids obsessed moms will have to move on but it really weighs on my some days that I won't always know where they are. I won't always know they are safe and their are days I may not even hear from them at all. UGH..but for now they are safe with me and I am loving every minute of it.

Oh Common Core You Are Killing Me!!!!

OK let's start by saying I am not smart. I was a below average student but man this Common Core stuff is killing me.

My daughter is learning in 3rd grade what I learned in 6th.

She started September learning multiplication and division simultaneously. When in second grade she was learning 5 + 18. There was no slow increase with long addition or subtraction. It was all thrown at her at once. She is like me a below average student and was completely lost.

Here we are in May and they have covered multiplication, division, decimals, measurements, finding the area, place value, number lines, fractions, operations and algebraic thinking and and now they are on geometry. AND because it was Common Core there were new terms for us to research like arrays and number bonds,  In 8 months! Nothing is fully learned. The continues flow of worksheets are ridiculous and I have to research everything. Needless to say we are exhausted and frustrated.

Math is the hardest subject for me. I truly never understood it. Helping my kids has definitely helped me. I wish I knew then what I know now.

Last week I was subbing in a self contained 6th grade class. I loved this chart the teacher had on the board. Makes it look so easy that I just have to share.

Like most families with kids, I DO a ton of laundry. It seems like the moment I feel caught up, I have more! Ugh...Buying laundry detergent is so expensive and I try not to spend too much on it. I need something that is going to clean my husband's greasy, dirty, dusty, uniforms and something that isn't going to be too hard on my son's sensitive, eczema ridden skin.

The other day, my father (the Coupon King) sent me a coupon for Purex Triple Action Mountain Breeze and this I must say, I LOVE it. I love the price and love the scent. Buying two different detergents for my families needs are no longer necessary. Knowing I can use Free and Clear on all of our clothes is great and if we get a coupon, I can splurge and get the second bottle for the scent I love but that means I have to remove Handsome's clothes and only use the Free and Clear on his. It is the best of both worlds. 

 

Simple As That

My husband came with us to a birthday party for a friend this weekend because I was feeling dizzy and sick all morning. We loved having him join us and seeing him play ball with the kids was one of my favorite moments. It truly is the Simple Things.

For Today... January 19, 2009

Outside my window...It is a little cloudy but the sun visits every so often. The snow is still semi fluffy and we are supposed to get more this week.

I am thinking... I missed one day of General Hospital and I am so lost.

I am thankful for... The fact that my husband is here working, my daughter is watching a movie and my son is playing a game. Everyone is doing their own thing but we are all together.

From the kitchen... Today, brunch was a Weight Watchers English muffin with cream cheese and the other half had peanut butter. Easy enough.

I am wearing... Pants, t-shirt and zip up hoodie.

I am reading... Breaking Dawn and Edward Norton's newest book I Hate Your Guts


I am hoping... for a nice, sunny day tomorrow. I want to take some local photos around town while the kids are both in school.

I am creating... Memories that will last a life time with my daughter which is why this is taking me so long to fill out. When she comes in, I stop typing to talk to her, answer her questions and hug and kiss her.

I am hearing... General Hospital in the room I am in, Super Mario in the living room and my daughter jumping in her room.

Around the house... Things are oddly quiet and relaxed.

One of my favorite things... is when there is left over coffee from the morning that I can heat up in the afternoon.

A few plans for the rest of the week... Drop some stuff off at the animal shelter, bring bags down to the bins, drop books at the library, donate some stuff to the school and get in touch with my sister some how.

October 12, 2008 - My Daughter loves riding on small toy cars. Usually it is a Barbie car but this time it was the prized Little People bus, a gift from Auntie Bek!

October 13, 2008 - The living room hasn't looked liked this in 5 years. 5 years ago when my son started crawling we sealed up the fireplace, moved the couch against it and forgot about it. This week my husband took the tape, sealer, plywood, garbage bags and insulation out, moved the couch and started our first fire in 5 years.

October 14, 2008 - There have been some pretty incredible skies this week. There is nothing like the colors of the trees in October and the amazing autumn sky. What is not to love.

October 15, 2008 - I have stopped my car so many times this week to take random photos. It is one of the reasons having the kids in school is good for my health.

October 16, 2008 - Like I said, we have had some truly amazing skies. This was around 6:30 p.m. and my kids and I were in the car looking at the full moon and the amazing clouds. They talked about the sky for an hour as we drove home.

October 17, 2008 - This is a Halloween decoration of a spider web but that is not why I took the photo. We were heading out to the car when I noticed a Walking Stick on the web. I took the photo and we left. When I came back he was there 5 hours later. Not sure why he hung out so long but the kids and I thought he was pretty amazing.
October 18, 2008 - Here is an old abandoned bird nest that was under the deck. The bottom was dried up mud that was as solid as concrete. My kids were so amazed with the nest and it was fun talking about why birds make nests and why.
