5 Ways to Choose a Baby Bassinet

Instinctively, parents want to keep their newborn close to them.  Dr. William Sears, a board-certified pediatrician, recommends that babies should sleep in the same room with parents but not in the same bed for the first year. The American Academy of Pediatrics recently released new guidelines stressing that co-sleeping under any circumstances is not safe for infant sleep.

Here are key factors to look for when choosing a bassinet:

  • Is it certified safe?

Parents should look for labels that say Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) which is the voice of the industry on quality and safety for baby and children's products or American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).

  • Check the age limit

Arm's Reach Co-Sleeper® bassinets are only for an infant up to approximately five months in age or when the child begins to push up on hands and knees, whichever occurs first. Move your child to crib when this stage is reached.

  • Portability for convenience

Bassinets are small and many are portable. This is convenient for visiting relatives or moving to other areas of your home.

  • Safety with Support

A soft mattress is dangerous for babies. Check that the mattress is strong enough to hold a baby without flexing.

  • Keep baby within Arm’s Reach

When a baby is within arm’s reach there is increased bonding, ease of feeding and a greater sense of closeness.  Created in 1997, the Arm's Reach® Co-Sleeper® brand bassinet was the first patented co-sleeping product on the market that attaches securely to a parent’s bed
