HipHunt: Fairmont, Philadelphia

The City of Brotherly Love is one of the most historically and artistically significant urban centers in all of North America, and the Fairmount neighborhood brings many of Philadelphia’s star qualities all together in one place. Complete this scavenger hunt in any order you choose during daylight hours, from approximately 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Happy hunting!
Historic and visually striking Le Meridien is a hotel unlike any other in Philly. Its architecture and interiors blend Georgian revival with modern upgrades that make for a royal stay (the hotel’s four-star rating affirms its elegance). Guests and gawkers alike can enjoy the hotel’s sky-lit atrium courtyard, which has inspired many a budding photographer. Take your artsiest photo of LeMeridien’s 75-foot-high atrium skylight and tag your photo #hipmunk to be featured on Hipmunk’s Instagram! I have always wanted to go to see some of the historic sections of Philadelphia.
More than a century ago, Fairmount’s North Broad Street set out to brand itself as one of the hippest districts in the city. The Divine Lorraine was integral to those efforts. Constructed in the early 1890s as a luxurious apartment house, the building was acquired by the leader of the Divine Peace Mission Movement in 1948 and converted into a hotel. For the next 50 years, the Lorraine was a hotbed of the civil rights and social welfare movement. Today, the beautiful old building piques the interest of many an urban explorer and offers a glimpse into Fairmount’s past. What’s making you feel divine as you stand in front of the Divine Lorraine? You’d have a harder time not spotting art in Fairmount than you will finding it. Philadelphia is known for its murals, and Fairmount is no exception. What makes this neighborhood unique is that it’s home to Philadelphia Mural Arts, the country’s largest public art program and the organization behind so many of Philly’s beautification projects. Take a picture of your top two Fairmount murals and poll your Facebook friends to find out their favorites. Tag us @thehipmunk so we can play along!
While you won’t be disappointed if you stick to the well-traveled perimeter of East Fairmount Park, consider a trip to its heart, where Lemon Hill offers a breather from the bustle of Fairmount’s streets and a sense of the area’s past. Lemon Hill mansion was built in the early 1800s and exemplifies the lifestyle of that era’s wealthiest Philadelphians. The grounds are now a popular spot for picnics, barbeques, and ogling Center City’s skyline. Have someone take a picture of you gazing out over Philly’s skyline from Lemon Hill, then tweet it to us @thehipmunk!
Eccentric and charming, La Calaca Feliz makes for a great meal at the end of a day’s adventure. Acclaimed chef Timothy Spinner blends modern cooking techniques with old-school ingredients (many of which are sourced locally and in season) to craft contemporary Mexican cuisine — think Squash Blossom Enchiladas, Jicama Salad, and Albondigas Skewers. If you’re old enough to imbibe, don’t miss out on their specialty cocktails, which blend flavors like mescal, ginger, cucumber, and passion fruit. Share your culinary adventure on Hipmunk’s Instagram by taking a photo of your meal and tagging it #hipmunk.
