I feel like New Adult has been this incredible forest fire, that once it caught it just went wild. And I'm loving it! I feel with all things in books, music, movies and TV we have a progression of certain issues becoming socially acceptable. For example, in I Love Lucy, they had to have separate beds, now there are steamy scenes on ABC Family TV shows! It's just a natural progression, and I feel like in reading, it was natural for us to come to the New Adult genre. Obviously there are genres like BDSM and I'm not saying NA is more intense than that. But more like it's a natural progression from Young Adult, to adult. So along with upping the age group, New Adult gets to push issues that you wouldn't normally see in Young Adult. Just like how movies and songs are pushing the limits all the time on what's acceptable, New Adult has pushed the limits and broadened what's acceptable in the reading world for these ages.

I honestly don't know why it finally caught on and is blowing up now, but I don't see signs of this genre slowing down. With how perfect it is for a wide variety of age groups, it's going to be a genre a lot more people keep coming to and keep wanting more of. For me personally, I started writing in it because I was their age and I could relate to what they were going through. But I feel like New Adult books tend to have a perfect mix of everything you're wanting in a story. There's romance and angst, the characters are old enough to have to go through sometimes huge life lessons and young enough to still have a lot of fun and be carefree. People say their late teens and 20s were some of the best years of their life. Makes sense the genre would be one of the best to write for and read through.

I watched her crawl onto my bed and my heart started hammering. Bree slept alone in my room when we had parties, but other than that, no girl had ever been in any of my bedrooms, and definitely not in my bed. And I was about to get in it with her. I could easily go crash on the couch or Brad’s floor, but the thought of waking up next to Harper was too tempting. When she was under the covers, I switched off the lights and crawled in beside her; she immediately flew up into a sitting position.

“What are you doing?” she hissed.

“What do you mean?”

“You can't get in here with me!”

So innocent. I laughed softly, but inside I was terrified she would actually ask me to leave, “It's my bed, I'm sure I can do what I want.”

Without another word, her half of the covers were flipped onto me, and the weight left her side of the bed. Her side? No…the side she’d been on. She didn’t have a side. This was just for tonight, right?

“Get back in the bed, Princess.”

She scoffed and I sighed. Snarky, sweet and stubborn as shit. God I wanted her. I rolled off the bed and picked her up off the ground.
