Book Nook Corner - Great Book for Boys 8-14 Years Old

Thanks to Harper Collins Children's Books I received Roberto & Me, A Baseball Card Adventure, by Dan Gutman.

I have to admit, when I saw the cover, I thought, ugh, Baseball, a sport story! So not what I want to read! I have mentioned this book to three people since finishing it two days ago.

Book Description: Sometimes you can change history . . . and sometimes history can change you.

When Stosh travels into the past to meet Roberto Clemente, a legendary ballplayer and a beloved humanitarian, he's got only one goal: warning Roberto not to get on the doomed plane that will end his life in a terrible crash. In the sixties, Stosh meets free-spirited Sunrise, and together they travel across the country to a ball game that leaves them breathless - and face-to-face with Roberto. But when the time comes for Stosh to return to the future, he finds that the adventure has only just begun. . . .

Join Stosh and Sunrise on a journey that will take you into the past, from the excitement of Woodstock to a life-changing encounter with Roberto Clemente - and into a surprising future!

In A Nutshell: This is the 10th book by Dan Gutman in what I am learning is a series of Baseball Card Adventure books. I loved it! Stosh tries to stop Baseball Hero, Roberto Clemente from getting on the plane that will inevitability take his life. Using the Baseball card he travels in time and ends up at Woodstock where meets some hippies who help him get to Roberto.

What I Can Tell You: I love when children's books put fiction and non-fiction together. I believe this type of writing leads to researching on the history of the non-fiction part, which only leads to more reading. Anything that gets kids reading, is ace in my book. Obviously, I am not a boy but I know that as a young girl, I would have loved this book too. The cover would have turned me off because it is so boy oriented but maybe that will make more boys pick up the book.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars!

  1. Great review!

My son is now 15, but I think he would still like this book, it's sports and he loves sports.

  3. I would have loved this book growing up--I couldn't care less about sports now, but I was a big baseball fan back then.
