Three Natural Alternatives to Pain Relief

If you’re experiencing pain, the solution largely depends on the cause, but there are many options available to you. While doctors can prescribe effective methods of pain relief, you may wish to explore natural alternatives which can be used instead of, or in addition to, traditional medical interventions.

Lessening your dependence on medication can help you lead a healthier lifestyle; it can also reduce the likelihood of becoming dependent on them and making them less effective.

There are many natural alternatives, from herbal pain relief, such as ginger and turmeric, to applying heat or cold to any pain points on your body. For mental health, eating a healthy diet and exercising are helpful alternatives from medication.

If you’re experiencing pain, you must always seek advice from a qualified medical professional. Once you have ruled out potentially serious injuries and illnesses, read on for some natural alternatives to pain relief.

Natural supplements

There are many natural supplements that you can take to aid pain relief. Many spices and herbs, for example, can help to ease inflammation and other painful conditions. These supplements are sometimes referred to as alternative medicine. Many plant-based Willow barks, turmeric and cloves are all said to be top choices for many people. When choosing supplements, always approach a reputable seller such as Health Monthly

Buying from unknown sources can be dangerous and potentially extremely bad for your health. Additionally, it’s advisable to consult a doctor before taking any natural remedies or supplements. If you’re already taking medication or have existing medical conditions, it’s especially vital that you seek advice from a medical professional before turning to alternative medicine.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese practice that aims to alleviate pain by balancing energy pathways in the body. This flow is called qi but is pronounced “chee”. For this alternative medical method, you must consult a qualified and reputable acupuncturist. The professional will ask you about your pain and then will insert very small, fine needles into your skin.

Acupuncture can help reduce stress and back pain or any neck tension you may be experiencing. It can also be a great way to rid yourself of any headaches, too. Whether you suffer from a weak immune system or allergies, acupuncture is an alternative route for you to discover and try before relying on pills and medication.

While the needles will be placed in an area that corresponds with the source of your pain, it may be in quite a different place on your body from where you’re experiencing the pain. While there are different schools of thought about how acupuncture works, a common theory is that it encourages the body to release the “happy” natural chemical, serotonin.

Ice and heat

One of the most well-known natural pain relief methods is applying alternating ice and heat to where you are feeling pain. Of course, you need to know what is best for what injury.

For arthritis, headaches and sprains, apply heat to the pain points. Heat increases blood flow and relaxes tight muscles. However, do not use heat for acute injuries as it can cause more inflammation.

As ice constricts blood vessels and numbs pain, relieving inflammation in the process, ice can help with gout flare-ups, strains, and tendinitis.

However, you can use both ice and heat for certain injuries, as explained below.

If you have just strained a muscle, for example, first apply ice to reduce inflammation and swelling. Then after ten minutes, apply something warm to reduce resultant stiffness. If you have a headache, an ice pack on your head can help to alleviate the pain. With arthritis, ice is unlikely to help, but moist heat very well might.

Invest in a good moist heat pack that can be reheated in the microwave and should last a long time. However, as with any natural pain remedy, if you’re experiencing pain or have suffered an injury, always seek medical advice.

Take great care

The natural alternatives to pain relief discussed above might only be effective or appropriate for certain pain causes. They may not all work for your particular condition, and some may not be appropriate for your needs. However, once you’ve sought advice, they may help you to feel better and avoid the need for traditional medications.
