5 Reasons Why Great Leaders Take Vacation



At Hipmunk, we’re big proponents of traveling — and not just because we’re one of the best resources out there for booking flights, hotels, and car rentals. It’s also because taking vacation has bona fide benefits for everybody (and we mean everybody). Good leaders know this and prioritize vacation accordingly. Below are just a few of the reasons why traveling should be on every leader’s to-do list.
1.   It prevents burnout. Failing to take restful breaks from work can weaken the immune system and potentially cause heart problems down the road. In fact, one study found that men who don’t take vacations have a 30 percent higher risk of having a heart attack; for women, it’s a whopping 50 percent. Quality vacation time can also ward off depression. Prioritizing health by taking regular vacations helps ensure that you’ll be physically and mentally sharp enough to continue leading for years to come.
1.   It enhances creativity. Even thinking about traveling somewhere new can boost creativity—and those benefits increase exponentially if you actually take that vacation. In fact, many people do their best brainstorming outside of work. Feeling stuck on a project? The solution might be getting away for a while.
1.   It increases productivity. People tend to feel re-energized by vacation, and this pays off back at the office. Studies consistently show that taking time off can make workers more productive. This goes for both leaders and employees. If the team isn’t performing to standards, the solution isn’t necessarily to increase work hours; maybe it’s telling everyone to take a break (you included).
1.   It gives employees a chance to shine. Effectively delegating tasks prior to a vacation gives team members the opportunity to prove they’re capable of running the ship in your absence. It also offers a chance to evaluate star players so you can encourage their upward trajectory once back in the office.
1.   It improves office culture. When people take vacation, they’re likely to return to work feeling happier and more relaxed. That blissed-out energy can actually be contagious—creating a ripple effect of positivity. Where would you (and your employees) rather work: A place where no one’s taken vacation in years and everyone is miserable all of the time, or one where people take the breaks they need, and happiness emanates throughout the office? Guaranteed the second option will help attract and keep big talent for years to come.
