Get Your Kids Started On A Series Of Books They Will Love For Ages 5-7

Katie Woo, Don't Be Blue

by Fran Manushkin
Illustrated by Tammie Lyon
Even Katie Woo has a bad day once in a while. Whether it’s a big rain storm or a nasty case of the flu, things happen that make Katie scared, nervous, or just plain sad. But don’t worry! With her friends and parents by her side, she won’t be blue for long.

The 411 by Maria and Goddess:

When I was a kid I loved getting involved in a series of books. You got to really know the character and their friends and family and loved them as if they were a real friend. It was a comfortable place to escape to when you needed a break from life and really who doesn't need it? Isn't that one of the reasons we read?  To escape our reality and head off to a far away land or take a trip with a beloved character is one of the best parts of reading.

In this series Katie Woo is perfect first experience in chapter books for girls about 5-7 years old. The pages have colorful pictures and at 90 pages they will get great exposure to a longer chapter book they can read all on their own.

Each page has at least one colorful photo and contains about one to two paragraphs. Perfect for my reluctant reader.

In this book; Katie is sleeping over her grandparents home. She helps grandpa in the garden and helps grandma make wonton soup.  At bedtime she is a little nervous and can't sleep. Grandpa offers some cookies to which my Goddess asked, "At bedtime? Really!" hahaha...tells you the kind of mom I am.

In another chapter, Katie and her family have to sleep at a shelter due to a storm. Another chapter is about moving day. The last is about the flu. In each chapter Katie is sad, scared, or upset about something. She is Blue! Poor Katie. However, thanks to her loving family she soon sees that she has nothing to fear!

Adorable book and I love that my daughter is being exposed to a different ethnicity and sees how very much the same we all are. We may have different skin, hair type or eyes but people are people. Plain and simple.

The Katie Woo series consists of over 27 books so far so you never run out of Katie and at $3.95 a book and I these are Chapter Books you can't go wrong.

Head over to my Scribd and download the Katie Woo Coloring page where kids can create their own dream room. Katie Woo Coloring Page
Also, Join the Katie Woo Reading Club on their Facebook page which will begin in September.  It is really easy and you get a Free Book too and a “Hosting your Book Club” Activity Kit. Can't wait. Maybe this is something I can do with my Brownie Troop.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary book from Capstone Young Readers for my honest opinion. No compensation was received and all opinions are my own.
