Meet POCOYO

The television series brings children into the bright and exuberant world of POCOYO, an inquisitive fun-loving three-year-old boy and his animal friends.  POCOYO encourages children to “learn through laughter.”  POCOYO is already an international sensation, and we hope U.S. audiences equally embrace this special property.

The television series began airing this summer on Nick Jr. and the first line of merchandise (available at Toys”R”Us) and DVDs are being released this fall.

What I Can Tell You:
We believe in age appropriate TV so my kids are still watching Nick Jr. POCOYO is one of the shows they have watched. While it is for preschoolers, my daughter still enjoys it at 5.

Personally, I like it because it is very primary. There is no sensory overload which is perfect for preschoolers. They only focus on the main characters of the show.

The show is narrated by a man and the characters don't do much speaking. There is a lot of music and facial expressions to aid the narrator in the storyline.

Perfect for 2-5 year olds.

From Press Release:
The CGI-animated television series brings children into the bright and exuberant world of Pocoyo (“little me” in Spanish), an inquisitive and fun-loving three year-old boy and his animal friends, Elly (the elephant), Pato (the duck) and Loula (his pet dog). Pocoyo is packed with music, dance, and humor, and encourages children to “learn through laughter™”.

Pocoyo began airing this summer on Nick Jr. and broadcasts daily – once in the fixed 4:25pm timeslot 7 days per week, plus two other times each day. Additionally, the series airs on Univision’s Saturday morning children’s block, Planeta U at 8:30am, PBS and Discovery Familia.

Pocoyo is visually very different to any other pre-school program. The innovative use of CGI animation allows Pocoyo to become a very real child-- he moves, talks, plays and learns like a toddler, and he can sulk and throw tantrums like only a toddler can! The ‘parent’ figure is voiced by writer/actor Stephen Fry who guides Pocoyo with gentle humor as he explores the world around him.

Pocoyo has a strong educational content, but never sacrifices its entertainment value or sense of fun. The characters, storylines, sounds and visual appeal of Pocoyo have been carefully researched to ensure that it’s perfectly tailored to encourage child development.

The philosophy behind Pocoyo is ‘Learning through Laughter™’. A research study undertaken in the UK by Dr. David Lewis has shown that laughter not only increases the enjoyment and engagement of the child but is proven to increase learning by 67%.

According to Dr. David Lewis there are three likely explanations behind the connection between learning and laughter:

“First it {laughter} encourages a more relaxed and more positive attitude towards learning. Second, it reduces anxiety about failing or making mistakes, which prevents many youngsters from even attempting an answer. Finally, it enhances creativity and a readiness to make connections between different aspects of the topic. In short, laughter helps the brain work better.”

The research study conducted in 2005 included an additional omnibus survey of 200 parents about their children’s laughter, including asking them questions about what makes their children laugh and when. The results were:

Ø Six out of ten (61%) supported the research findings by confirming that their child always learned far more quickly and easily when laughter was on the timetable.
Ø More than nine out of ten (96%) parents said that ‘pulling a funny face’ always made their under-fives laugh.
Ø 77% said that bodily noises make their under-five-year-olds laugh.
Ø However, clowns are out of favour, with less than half (44%) of parents saying that they make their under-five-year-olds laugh.

Pocoyo has already won the hearts of many fan--and many awards too. On Sunday September 5th, 2010, Pocoyo won the Kineo Diamante al Cinema Award at the prestigious Venice Film Festival in Italy, for the most successful film or TV series of the year. In addition, Pocoyo has won three Pucinella Prizes at the Italian Cartoons on the Bay Festival. In the U.K., the television series won a BAFTA Award (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) for Best Animated Preschool Series; and in France, won Best TV Series at the Annecy Cartoon Festival. In the U.S., Pocoyo is the winner of a Parent’s Choice Gold Medal.

In Meet Pocoyo!, a September 7, 2010 DVD release from NCircle Entertainment, preschoolers will learn through laughter as Pocoyo and friends explore the world around them. In seven hilarious stories, Pocoyo enjoys making music, blowing bubbles, solving puzzles and even watching an egg hatch. Filled with sights and sounds perfectly tailored to encourage child development, Meet Pocoyo! was created to engage, entertain and educate preschool age children. The DVD runs 47 minutes and features both English and Spanish language tracks. Meet Pocoyo! is available at www.ncircleentertainment.com or www.amazon.com. SRP $6.99 (introductory rate).

Also, for Pocoyo fans, Bandai America Incorporated has launched an all-new line of Pocoyo merchandise in the United States, available now.
