Another Book Review From My 2 Week Sick Leave

Dr. Jonny Bowden is touring in January with his anti-aging nonfiction book, The Most Effective Ways to Live Longer and thanks to a busy public relations representative, I was mailed a copy to review.

Book Summary:
In this entertaining and life-changing book, best-selling nutritionist Jonny Bowden, PhD explains how all diseases of aging really come down to four basic processes which he calls “The Four Horsemen of Aging”—Inflammation, Glycation, Oxidation and Stress. You’ll learn exactly how they age you and just what to do to prevent them. You’ll learn how aging affects five major components of the body- the brain, the heart, the hormone system, the immune system and the bones and muscles; and how to prevent or slow aging in all these areas. Finally, you’ll learn the secrets of the “Blue Zones”- those areas around the globe where people routinely live healthy and productive lives into their late 90’s and beyond. You’ll learn the surprising truth about what to eat, what exercises to do, and what simple lifestyle changes you can make to support a ten-decade life of autonomy, health, joy and productivity.

My Opinion In A Nutshell: The book has over 264 pages of information about living a long, healthy life. The beautiful, colorful pictures accompany easy to read, easy to follow advice on how to slow the aging process by fighting "The Four Housemen of Aging" - Free Radicals or Oxidation, Inflammation, Glycation and Stress. As a 43 year old women with grandparents in their 90's this book is very interesting to me. My mom died before 35 and my dad has always had medical issues but I can look at how my grandparents lived and see that Dr. Jonny Bowden's book is right on target.  My grandfather had a triple bypass over 20 years ago but is still going and that has to do with the way he lived.

This book is well worth its price of $16.49.

I particularly loved Dr. Bowden's Anti-Aging Action Plan on how to boost your immune system because most of the suggestions simply make for a better life all around:

Learn to relax
Learn to laugh at yourself
Learn to listen
Practice forgiveness
Put yourself in other people's shoes

The quote that sticks with me the most today is: For every 1 pound of weight lost, there is a 4-pound reduction in the load exerted on the knee for each step taken during daily activities. I have terrible knees and will eventually need knee replacement surgery. This is very motivational for me to drop at least 10 pounds over the next year.

His work has been endorsed by a virtual who’s who in the world of integrative medicine and nutrition including Dr. Christiane Northrup, Dr. Mehmet Oz, Dr. Barry Sears (who calls him “one of the best”) and Dr. Ann Louise Gittleman, (who calls him “the personal health coach I would want in my corner no matter what”).

Dr. Bowden writes the monthly “Healthy Solutions” column for Better Nutrition Magazine, is a regular contributor to America Online, and a contributing editor for both Clean Eating magazine and Total Health Magazine.

  2. I'm sorry you have knee issues--I have them too. My weight loss needs to be a lot more than 10 pounds though....working on it though! Got me a treadmill!
Sounds like a great book worth checking out.

  3. Fredamans, It was a really good book. I will not be giving this one to my library. Surely I will be re-reading it throughout the rest of my days.

Renee, Sorry to hear about your knees too! It sucks to not be able to do things I want. I try to deny it but sometimes they just don't work the way they want to.

Good luck on the weight loss. The treadmill is my least favorite way to exercise but last year I did 10 minutes a day and Wii fit and lost 12 pounds. It may be time to go back to the drawing board for me.
