Can A Diet Plan Defy Your DNA?

The Gene Smart Diet certainly tries and motivates you to stay on track.

Thanks to one of my PR contacts I was sent a copy of the Gene Smart Diet Book which asks:

Can you rewrite your genetic destiny?

You can, according to the new Gene Smart Program, an innovative new wellness and nutrition program that leverages the latest understanding of the relationship between our diet and our genes. The Gene Smart Program debuted in June 2009 by Floyd H. "Ski" Chilton, PhD, a pioneer in the study of gene-based nutrition and inflammatory diseases, as well as the launch of a comprehensive new health and wellness web site and his Facebook page.

The Gene Smart Diet by Floyd H. Chilton, PhD starts like every other diet plan book. An introduction to the plan. The basics on why what we have done in the past hasn't worked and a truckload of scientific jargon about how the body works, processes what we feed it and how the plan works. However that is where the similarities end.

What I love about the book, well there are many things I love about it.

Five Diet & Exercise Principles

1. Increase polyphenols

2. Add omegas

3. Increase fiber

4. Reduce calories

5. Exercise to reduce whole body inflammation

I love the chapter titles, Shock and Awe, Old Before Our Time, Hunter-Gatherer, Meet The Fast-Food Nation.

The Gene Smart Diet is a no nonsense plan. Truthfully this is like the tough love book that we all need. The plan doesn't sugar coat anything:

You have to cut calories to lose weight!
You have to exercise to lose weight!
You have to change the way you are eating to lose weight!

Slow change is better than no change at all!

The plan starts with a 3 week Adaptive Response Phase where you reduce your calories by 20-30% and exercise 5 days (2 days light, 2 moderate, 1 vigorous).

The next step is a 2 week Preconditioning Phase, where you will reduce by 10-20%.

The last step Optimal Maintenance, in this portion you will neutralize your calories and stay active, stay strong!

Gene Smart will help stabilize blood sugar levels
The Good:
  • I love plans that are easy to follow, plans that lay it all out for me. I don't want to think about what I should eat. I want someone to tell me.
  • The workout plans are easy and descriptive.
  • Grocery lists that are easy and don't contain things we can't locate at our local supermarket.
  • Menus that are filling and easy to recreate.
  • There is a meal plan for the entire 5 week plan
The Bad:
  • Restricting and changing your eating habits are not easy things to do.
  • There is more medical information than anyone really needs to know most people just want the bare bones.

We can't fight age but we can put up a good fight. This plan teaches you how to slow down the aging process by keeping your cells healthy.

Plan English = Burn more than you consume
